If the Lakers Trade Gasol, What Should They Seek in Return?

Recommended Posts

Not necessarily a specific player (although feel free to name somebody), but more in terms of what type of player should they be after?

An athletic wing defender?

A true point guard?

A floor spacing third option?

A young, athletic power forward?

What do you think the Lakers should be after if they do decide to trade Gasol?

It's really hard to say, because it all depends on if we're going to shop Drew as well. A lot of people are speculating that both bigs will be on the block, although Drew will be there for a limited amount of time AND for a specific player or two (I don't need to say who...everyone already knows).

But, assuming we keep Drew (or get Howard)...I'd like to see us try and get a true PG out of Gasol, although Iguodala sounds pretty nice, also. I know people keep saying there's no way we can rake in Deron Williams, but that's what they were saying about Chris Paul, also...and, yet, for one day, we had Kobe, Drew and CP3 on a team together. The last time I checked, the NBA doesn't own any teams going into this offseason.

If we could work a three-way to send Gasol to Minnesota, Houston or Boston (the three teams that were talking to LA in December), and bring Deron to LA, I would be jumping for joy. I'm not going to sit here and say it's impossible, and I won't say it's going to happen...but you have to consider the need for a big man, and Gasol is best playing the center position.

At that point, we can fill out the team with minimums and using our TPE. The TPE can be used to bring in a PF to play in front of Jordan Hill. Sessions can be our sixth man, a slashing PG that can create out of penetrations (as long as he's not shooting jumpers, he is very productive for us).

A true PG that has at least all-star level play...that takes the ball out of Kobe's hands a little more, gives him more energy to score and defend, rather than to create for everyone else, and if that PG can get into the teeth of the opposing defense, he can feed Drew and our shooters (one of the biggest things we have to look into getting this summer, even the cheap shooters that do nothing BUT hit shots).

If we weren't the Lakers, I'd have a hard time believing we can pull all of that off...but something deep down tells me we can.

Honestly I don't know why anyone would trade anything significant for him. He's paid like a franchise player when he is getting closer and closer to being a complimentary player, 3rd option seems ideal for him, but at that pay rate? He is coming off a series in which he was invisible, and is 32 years old.

Like RD said, somehow LA manages to convince teams to do stupid deals (has a lot to do with players forcing their way there, but thats not the point), but I just don't see why anyone would trade for him. He has so many things going against his value right now.

If I was LA, I would take a starting caliber C who can protect the rim, as well as a starting PG or SF who has age on their side. You can't trade him for a prospect or a pick, otherwise Kobe might want out. So its really a tough situation. If I bet money on it, I bet that they come back with their same big 3, which I think is the best idea, since I think Pau is more valuable to LA than he is to other teams.

I guess we will see. If I am LA my priority is bringing Dwight to LA for Bynum, not trading Pau.

Agreed with CMS that Pau's value has hit rock bottom and is probably a whole lot more value to the Lakers than whatever he'll rake in on the trade market. Pau is another year older and just went through his 2nd straight piss-poor performance in the playoffs. Not to mention on a very large contract when the new CBA will begin punishing tax paying teams at the beginning of next season.

Houston is no longer interested in Pau Gasol, the three team deal was a setup for another one and I seriously doubt Daryl Morey and the Rockets will bend over for the Lakers with their master plan thrown out the window via David Stern (you know it was something big when Morey said the veto set them back 3 years). If the Rockets do seek to trade for Pau then its going to be for a whole lot less than they originally paid for, and no chance it will involve Kyle Lowry and Houston won't help a conference rival acquire Deron Williams when they covet Deron themselves. I don't know about Minnesota but David Kahn would have to be an idiot to bring in a 32 year old coming off a terrible playoff performance (trading away Derrick Williams at that too) and take away playing time for Pekovic when their biggest need is a scorer on the perimeter.

If the Lakers are going to trade Bynum for Dwight then it should be this offseason because Andrew Bynum is an expiring contract himself and that is going to hurt his value if the Dwight saga prolongs into the trade deadline again. Heck throw Pau Gasol in the same package (he's not going to garner much value in the market anyways) and take back Turkoglu to seal it.

Is Steve Nash on the Lakers radar? They could offer the mini-MLE assuming Nash is willing to sign that cheap for a title run, but then again the Heat could make the same offer.

I'm sure any PG with the ability to run an offense is on our radar. Not sure if Nash really wants to play for the Lakers, though...but then again, I've said that about a LOT of players going to their respective teams, surprising the hell out of me.

I'm a believer that Jordan Hill can be a producer as a starter. If we can retain him then we should certainly try to shop Pau for a pg even though its a really small market.

I'm also not opposed to bringing in a guy like Iggy as Brandon mentioned, but that really seems like a longshot to me. Its getting to the point where I don't really care who we get for Pau as long as its 1) a valuable asset and 2) helps us clear cap space. I have full faith in Mitch to get something done as long as we have some cap flexibility.
