Nitro
Here's the thing- Starting next year, under the new CBA, teams in the luxory tax can't make sign and trades, and won't have the full MLE. This makes building a contender nearly impossible for the Knicks, so 4 players alone pushing the Knicks over the tax isn't exactly a smart decision even with Dolan's deep pockets. I said it on the last page, the notion of over-spending doesn't work that well in a cap system, especially one as strict as the new CBA. NomarFachix
Jeremy Lin would cost the Knicks over $30M in year three with the repeat offender tax. That is linsane.  For a guy with no left hand, no defense (JYD already said a superstar needs to play both ways), 25 career starts, D'Antoni inflation, and an inability to dribble beyond mid court against Miami... there sure is a lot of outcry here. The dude sat our playoff series at a self proclaimed 85% because he was worried about his payday. Same reason he pulled out of the Olympics stuff. Made it to the ESPY's though! There are actually 'boycott MSG' websites and people threatening to switch to Brooklyn. High comedy. JYD
All of that stuff is garbage IMO. What does 85% ready even mean? lol. Fact of the matter is, Knicks are claiming it's win now, and Lin is better than Felton and Kidd at this stage of their careers. Lin could turn out to be mediocre, not saying he's a superstar (definitely isn't now) or ever will be. But if he's giving you 15/7 and limiting his turnovers, he's worth the money IMO. We saw last year Baron Davis kill the Knicks down the stretch, as it was obvious they needed Lin/upgrade at PG and YOUTH in the backcourt.  Don't see that happening getting Kidd, Felton and Prigoni Edited July 16, 2012 by JYD
NomarFachix
85% means better than Ewing played his entire career. Lin could be mediocre, so let's pay him $25M and owe $15M in tax in year 3, essentially bumping to 3 years, $40M. Worth it because Lin had an awesome 10 game stretch and has 25 career starts.  Baron Davis was a broken down old man with health issues. Doesn't compare to the other three, and they're all upgrades over playoff starter Mike Bibby..

I bet pretty damn good over those 25 starts. And the same people who criticize him for being 'unable to dribble past half court against miami' didn't say shit when he dropped 38 and 7 against kobe and the lakers. Nitro
Lin struggling against the Heat like he did is a big red flag, but he shouldn't be crucified for it. The Heat made kinda made Rose look like a scrub in the 2011 ECF, the MVP, so to expect a guy in his 10th start or so to put up a strong performance against them is asking a little much. However, what hurts Lin is the fact that he only had a sensational 10-15 games, and maybe another 5 solid performances. How much should that weigh over the fact that he didn't impress scouts enough in college to be drafted, and he was a bench warmer for the majority of his NBA career? Mix in the fact that he succeeded in as PG-friendly system that you'll find with D'Antoni, and turned the ball over at an incredible rate and doesn't have exceptional physical attributes...he is still a HUGE question mark. From a basketball standpoint, the overall scope of his career doesn't warrant the contract he is getting, especially since the 3rd year of his contract is so ridiculous and would destroy the Knicks' financially. He might be worth that risk, but if you put the "Linsanity" stretch of games aside, which was overblown since it happened in NY and at a time where NY looked like they were gonna miss the playoffs, it doesn't look like he will be. He still has a lot to prove as far as consistency, how good he really is, etc.  But at the same time I'm not going to sit here and concede he isn't better than Raymond Felton and Jason Kidd at this stage of each player's career. NomarFachix
Is he 20 million dollars better? Is he 48 whatever million in his third year better? He's good. He's not worth what he's getting, or what we'd have to suffer to bring him back. He's not worth crippling your team, not when Felton/Kidd isn't a drastic drop. But I'm not sure about that though, considering we've all stated it's a win now mind state. We also have no idea what Felton or Kidd will provide. I haven't watched Kidd play much over the past 5 years, and haven't seen Felton since he moved on from the Knicks, either. All I know is Kidd is 38, and everybody in Portland wanted to get rid of Felton.  Also, like Ian OConnor wrote in the article, You could move Amar'e's contract in that 3rd year too, which would be 23 million dollars if it's obvious the Knicks can't compete for a championship with the roster. Stop. contract year....even worse, fatass couldn't even get motivated to get in shape in a contract year..that's just absurd yea he's never been physically fit but it's been getting worse over the years, and next season all signs indicate he will be even fatter and even more lazy pg is the most important position in the east toowith rose, rondo, d-williams  sucks knicks got the fattest one

NomarFachix
I honestly feel like we are going to match Lin...I actually just found out about that stretch provision, where if you cut a guy before his last season the final year's payment is allowed to be paid off over a three year time period.. if that's true, and Lin sucks and we cut him after year 2 and get to spread the payments/cap hit out for three extra years, I'd be fine with re-signing him.
