The official ball of the 2014 World Cup will be the Adidas Brazuca. The name was selected by a public vote that received responses from more than 1 million Brazilian football fans; "Brazuca" received over 70 per cent of the vote.[23] Adidas, the official FIFA World Cup match ball supplier since 1970, took inspiration from elements of Brazilian culture to come up with a shortlist of three possible names for the ball that also included Bossa Nova and Carnavalesca.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup mascot will be a three-banded armadillo - to be called either Amijubi, Fuleco or Zuzeco.

You can help choose his name by voting at: http://mascot.fifa.com/

The nickname nominees are:

  • Amijubi
  • Fuleco
  • Zuzeco

P.S.

English version won't allow you to vote. In the 'Português' one click on "ESCOLHA MEU NOME", choose the name you like the most and 'VOTE AGORA'! ;)

EDIT:

Here you are:

Big day tomorrow for qualifying, especially in CONCACAF. Jamaica faces Guatemala, both level at seven points with the U.S., in what is probably one of the most significant games of the day.

Another significant game is Argentina versus Uruguay. While Uruguay started off hot, they've really fallen off and sit in the last qualifying spot for the finals. Argentina on the other hand started off poor but has since got things together and currently sit atop the group. This match really has he chance to indicate the path each team continues on.

Clearly the big games tomorrow are:

England vs. San Marino

Netherlands vs. Andorra

Faroe Islands vs. Sweden

Czech Republic vs. Malta

Must see television.

For any gamblers out there, if you put $1 on parlay of England, Netherlands, Sweden, and Czech Republic you get a staggering return of 21 cents.

Conversely, if you made the same parlay, picking the other four teams; your $1 nets a return of $6,983,735.83.

In case anyone cares.

Brazil: Protest Against Privatization

6 October, 2012 - 21:52

A peaceful demonstration in front of the City Hall of Porto Alegre, Brazil, on October 4, ended with police brutality and teargas on the protesters, Sul21 reports [pt] (with photos and videos). Students were dancing in protest against the privatization of several public spaces around the city sponsored by Coca Cola company

Brazil: Protests Against Privatization of Public Space in Porto Alegre

On October 4, 2012 hundreds of students and activists met at the Montevideo Plaza and in the Glênio Peres Square in Porto Alegre, to protest against what they called the privatization of public space.

They protested against the banning of use of that square by street performers and by the general population for artistic activities or fairs, as Coca-Cola was allowed to use the space to put a gigantic inflatable “Tatu-bola” (Soccer Armadillo), symbol of the 2014 World Cup. Porto Alegre is one of the main host cities. Marco Aurelio Weissheimer explained:

"The city hall handed over to Coca-Cola the task of “taking care” of the Glênio Peres Square, one of the most traditional areas of the center of the capital and historically a space for social protest, cultural and political gatherings.

[…]

The initiative is not unique. Other public spaces of the city are being turned over to the management of [Mayor] Fortunati to the private sector, as is the case of Araújo Viana Auditorium, now under the care of Opus, a producer. An enterprise-oriented, nationalistic swagger wrapped in “construction for the World Cup” justifies the private invasion of public spaces in the city."

The students and activists tried to destroy the mascot - in which they succeeded - and in the process were repressed with extreme violence by the Military Brigade, the local military police at the service of the Governor of the state.
