Duncan takes 54% paycut

Recommended Posts

Tim Duncan’s Hall of Fame credentials are set. His legacy needs no polishing at this late stage of his magnificent career.

And yet Duncan continues to shine.

He’s doing it this time without even touching the court. By taking a whopping 54 percent pay cut to remain with the Spurs, he abstained from the summer’s free-agent-palooza and allowed the Spurs to maintain their financial flexibility. That helped San Antonio keep its core group intact as it tries to mount one last championship run in the Duncan era.

“I’m an awful negotiator,” Duncan said, chuckling. “My agent was mad at me the whole time.”

Lets be realistic, Duncan was taking a huge paycut regardless.

I love the guy and think he is still a very good player, but you have to take into consideration that he signed his previous deal when he was still a top 5 player in the league. Of course his new deal was going to be a huge paycut when you consider that he made $21M and change last season.

I do agree that he basically could've went up to the Spurs and gotten whatever he wanted from them and I also agree that he is worth more than what he signed for (it was 3/30 right?), but it isn't like he took a 54% paycut from what he is actually worth at this stage in his career.

At least he doesn't get paid 50% more than he is worth like that guy on the Lakers does.

EDIT: worth production wise.
