Built Ford Tough Posted October 20, 2012 Report Share Posted October 20, 2012 Florida State procured a commitment from Xavier Rathan-Mayes (Scarborough, Ontario/Huntington Prep), the nation's No. 24 senior in the ESPN 100, on Saturday night. The Canadian shooting guard committed to the Seminoles over Illinois and Connecticut. The Seminoles have ties to Mayes, whose father, Tharon Mayes, starred for Florida State from 1987-90. Rathan-Mayes is in his second season at Huntington (W. Va.) Prep, one of the nation's top prep squads. As a junior, Rathan-Mayes averaged 14.6 points, 4.5 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from 3-point range Florida State had been considered the favorite for Rathan-Mayes, but he visited the Seminoles and Illinois officially and was on Connecticut's campus last year. He can be a bit of a chucker at times, but he can go off and put points on the board in a hurry. He has a nice shooting stroke and, even though he is only 6'3, does a nice job of creating space to get his shot off. With that said, the real story here is what this means when it comes to Andrew Wiggins' recruitment. From everything I've read Wiggins is down to two schools; Kentucky and FSU. The overwhelming majority believe that Kentucky is the favourite, but a lot of those people are second guessing that opinion now that XRM is going to FSU. For those of you who don't know why Rathan-Mayes committing to FSU is a big deal for Wiggins' recruitment, the two of them are best friends and grew up together. They lived about 15 minutes apart growing up, they both play for Huntington Prep and they played for the same AAU team (CIA Bounce). Their dads both played together for the Sixers as well. It will be interesting to see where Wiggins ends up. Like many people, I figured he'd go to Kentucky but I'm not as sure now that XRM, who I thought was going to end up playing for Illinois, is going to FSU. I honestly think it might get to the point that if you can be a player and dominate NOT on that team, it is going to help your draft stock. I would love to see Wiggins go to FSU. Leonard Hamilton has done a fantastic job turning that program around over the past 4 years (95-41 record). He has led them to 4 straight tournament appearances after not making the tournament for something like 10 or 11 years and they won their first ever ACC Championship this past year. He has gone 25-10 2 out of the past 4 seasons, which are tied for the school record in wins. He has really established the Seminoles as a defensive powerhouse and are regularly among the best defenses in all of Division 1 basketball. They are on the up and up as a basketball school, that is for sure. However, despite that, you are likely right. Even with the growth of FSU's program, I highly doubt that they are a finalist for Wiggins if it wasn't for his parents' both going to FSU. Wiggins visited the campus officially yesterday and will be in attendance at tonight's game. With how bad we have been this year, I don't see him coming here.
