His knees are getting worse by the day. By now, at 28, he has had so many surgeries, so many treatments and seen so many doctors, he sounds like a specialist. He explains that he has degenerative arthritis, which erodes and eventually eliminates cartilage, with the same precision and ease that came to define his run of three consecutive All-Star appearances. And with the calm that made him one of the game's best finishers, he explains that his knees have reached Level III arthritis. There are only four stages. BFT, i did a quick google search for guys who have had a knee replacement who are/were active in the NBA and they were all coaches, literally.. tom thibedau (spelling?), mike d'antoni (the surgery that is keeping him on crutches atm) and jerry sloan when he was coaching the Jazz. one conclusion, coaching is a grueling job. i dont think he could be able to run after knee replacement surgery, let alone play ball at a very high level. It sucks, can't tell if he is around for some extra cash or if he really just can't sit around without playing the game - could be a bit of both I guess. That's why I don't think Kobe will retire until dude physically cannot play - these guys really don't know anything else, its been basketball basketball basketball since they were 15, 16 years old. It sucks to see guys who are a shell of their old selves, but to sit here and say walk away like its so easy, I think that is just ignorant. Definitely would love to see the guy become a coach though. Surely some team would hire him on as an assistant and let him work his way up. He seems like a heady player, and the guy is in his mid 20's, has a ton of time to learn that side of the game. If he is really that passionate about the game, that's the only answer really. Also I hope no one feels bad for the Wolves in this situation. It was stupid of them to give him so much money when it was so obvious that there was no chance of this working out for them. The Blazers had no choice in the money they gave him, he was a top 15 player and any other team who could have offered that money would have. The Wolves though? Nope, just a bad, bad move.
