But he seems like a high pick who has already maxed out his potential and won't be any more than an average player. Evan Turner-ish. I always thought JvR had the chance to be really good with a bigger role. He only got one real chance to be a top line player here, and that was the beginning of last season. For the record, I don't hate the Bobrovsky trade on the surface...given the Bryz contract, Bob had to go. No point to keeping him here. I just hate that the team was in a position where they had to trade him. Too bad they didn't hang onto him until after the new CBA...would make a Bryz amnesty a slam dunk. Oh, and they’re the only team in the league that’s over the cap. The fact is, the Flyers have pieces, and that's what matters in today's NHL, when making you can go from being bottom 5 to top 5 in your conference in literally just one year. Having Giroux and Brayden up the middle is going to be rock solid for the next decade, and then wingers like Simmonds, Read, Voracek, et al. will help round out that top 6 nicely. I question where Couturier fits in - is he your 3rd line center going forward, ala Jordan Staal? Or does he move into the top 6, shifting Brayden or Giroux to the wing? His production has been a massive disappointment for me, but you'd probably have to watch him every night to really glean what he brings to the table. I think the biggest problem is Philly isn't really sure what they want to be. Are they rebuilding/retooling? Or are they trying to win? There is a market out there for guys like Timmonen, Hartnell and Briere (not sure if they have NTC/NMC's?) should they decide to get younger, and start over. The back end is a mess there, with a ton of money tied up. Philly wouldn't be in a terrible position to take this year and next to rebuild the farm through the draft and trades, even if it means missing the playoffs both years. It wouldn't take long, seeing as there are a ton of young, good players who are already contributing. I just don't think their GM is willing to do it, he reminds me a lot of Colangelo. Sure they have a few pieces, but every single one is already a top 6 NHL forward. That's it. Not really anything else of value in the entire organization except for Scott Laughton and this upcoming 1st round pick. Then, consider the cap situation, and you can probably understand why I am worried. As for Couturier...he has shown signs of turning his offensive game around, but he still has a lot of work to do there. Very inconsistent, but he has not been getting a lot of ice time lately. Seems to be in Laviolette's doghouse, which is silly to me. If there are any positives to be gained from this season, his development would be at the top of the list. Defensively, he is already an absolute stud. I don't think there is such a thing as "rebuild" for the Flyers, so I don't see them conceding this season any time soon, as dumb as that seems.
