gaborik got rocked by carcillo. no clue why he would want to fight carcillo

I also have no clue why none of his teammates got him out of there. His teammates must hate him.

Also I didn't realize what a [expletive] Brandon Dubinsky is.

He was sticking up for himself. Why none of his teammates tried to help their star player go after the waste of cap space that is Carcillo is beyond me, but Carcillo went after Gaborik, gave him a face wash with his glove. What do you want the guy to do?

Also has anybody else noticed that there are always a TON of penalties during the NBC games? It's as if the NHL thinks lots of special teams is the only way to lure new fans. And when it's the league's most penalized team against the team that is on the power play more than anybody else, it is a pretty bad combination.

I know the Flyers had more power plays than the Penguins today so this is kind of a moot point, but quality of penalty should be more important than quantity. The refs were responsible for a 2-goal swing that was the difference in the game.

Also there are several rules I'd like to see taken out of the game, or edited at least. One being the double minor for drawing blood on a high stick. This is just flat out the dumbest rule in pro sports. Also I'd like to get rid of the delay of game call for flipping a puck out of play from your own end. If it is clearly an intentional delay of game then fine give a delay of game or unsportsmanlike conduct or something, but this gets called so much and it's just unnecessary IMO.

i agree. an unintentional high stick (its easy to tell if its intentional or not) should be 2 minutes regardless. if there is intent then give them a 4 minute

Carcillo got ripped by Don Cherry for fighting a European. Pretty funny that nobody stuck up for him especailly Sean Avery since he only fights when he knows he can win.

Did anyone see Alexander Ovechkin almost fight the other day? His teammate flew in once Ovy dropped the gloves and got the third man in penalty just so he didn't get hurt.

Matt Cooke bit Arron Asham's hand today. I have not seen any pics of his hand but apparently there are clear bite marks. I do remember the scrum where this happened, and I guess this explains why Asham was so pissed off. Also it will be interesting to see how the league handles this, since they did not discipline Scott Hartnell after he supposedly bit Kris Letang earlier in the season (although a lot of people claim that Letang made that up). Anyway, I do know one thing, the Penguins and Flyers have one game remaining this season and it will be nasty. Also, looks like Penguins fans may want to rethink those "Hartnell bites" signs for the next game.

A couple notes for today...

Ryan Parent had back surgery today and will miss 6 weeks. Apparently Mika Pyorala has been practicing as a defenseman so it will be interesting to see what happens. I had heard that Holmgren is trying to work a trade but maybe they will use Pyorala back there until Syvret/Parent come back if nothing turns up. Tollefsen has been horrible since returning from his injury.

Also, ESPN can [expletive] themselves. Pierre LeBrun ripped up the Flyers PR guys for tweeting a link to the video of the Carcillo/Gaborik fight. Well maybe Pierre ought to do a little bit of research next time, seeing as the NHL provided flyers.com with the videos and encouraged them to be shared. And as I said earlier, most importantly, the national media needs to stop acting as if Gaborik is a victim here. He did not get jumped, he got exactly what he wanted. But that's how reputations work in the NHL I guess. The link to the LeBrun thing is below.

Also, John Stevens will make his broadcasting debut tonight with Versus for the Penguins/Rangers game. I for one am very interested to see how he does, he has never struck me as the media type.

One more thing.

One of the local sports TV guys said that after the Carcillo/Gaborik fight, a scout for another team that he is friends with texted him saying that the league was not happy at all about it (well, clearly) and that the Flyers were going to have a hell of a time getting any favorable calls, at least for the immediate future. Yesterday, after the Scott Hartnell "goaltender interference" and Simon Gagne "high stick", he got a follow up text from the scout saying that was precisely what he was talking about.

Now, I think those penalties were probably just as much a product of the game being NBC and the officials being under pressure to call more penalties in general, which I think is ridiculous as well, but needless to say this league has a lot of problems right now.

Yeah I saw that. That's probably how the Rangers should have handled it, but honestly Gaborik probably had more balls than any of his teammates on the ice at that time as unbelievable as that sounds.

The Flyers picked an awful time to play their worst period of the year. That was a huge 2 points that they just pissed away.

If the Flyers miss the playoffs by a point or 2, this will be the game I point at. Just horrible.

I really like the new lines.

Gagne-Richards-Hartnell

Powe-Carter-Briere

van Riemsdyk-Giroux-Asham

Carcillo-Betts-Laperriere

The bottom 2 lines have been the same for a while, but today Laviolette switched Hartnell and Powe, and now Hartnell is playing on the right side with Richards and Gagne. Other than Carter, the top 2 lines have sucked for the past couple weeks. The Giroux and Betts lines have been carrying the offense. In the first period today, it looked like the switches paid off because the top 2 lines looked very good. Hopefully this continues.

Alright, well thank goodness the Flyers won today, despite one of the worst officiating displays I have seen all season, which further added to my suspicion that the NHL has it out for the Flyers as a result of the Carcillo/Gaborik incident. For those who didn't see it, the Flyers were up 2-0 when Kimmo Timonen scored. Scott Hartnell bumped into Dwayne Roloson after the puck was clearly in the net. None of the officials signaled no-goal. and Kerry Fraser who was standing 5 feet away from the net and had the best view of anybody signaled good goal. Roloson and the rest of the Islanders complained, and the officials looked at the jumbotron for a replay and then decided to change their mind, which is bull[expletive] on so many levels. First of all, goaltender interference is not a reviewable play. Also, every single official agreed that it was a good goal when it happened, and they did not decide to change their mind until after the Islanders complained and they saw the arena-vision replay. And all of this doesn't change the fact that the puck was clearly past Roloson before Hartnell made contact! Anyway, they called off the goal and gave the Islanders a power play, which they scored on, and made it a 2-1 game instead of 3-0. This is the second 2-goal swing this week that the officials have caused against the Flyers. Peter Laviolette was going insane. I really thought John Stevens was a good coach but he never would have called out poor officiating, and I am happy to see Laviolette ball up and call them out.

Anyway, I hope this a trend that doesn't continue much longer.

The Flyers signed Lukas Krajicek today. I'd be lying if I said I knew much about him, but I am guessing this means the end of OK Tollefsen being in the lineup every night, AKA a stop-gap until Danny Syvret and/or Ryan Parent get back. Or possibly this means Oskars Bartulis will head back to the AHL. Who knows, we will find out.

Anyway, to make room, Mika Pyorala was sent to the Phantoms. He had been a healthy scratch pretty much every game for the past month and a half or so.

[expletive]ing horrible. Lost 1-0 to the [expletive]ing Edmonton Oilers, gave up a power play goal with 16 seconds left. This is about as awful as it gets. Didn't help that it was a [expletive]ing bull[expletive] penalty to give the Oilers that power play.

This is the worst loss I can remember in a few years, given how badly they need points and all. They did not play awful, but they cannot get 0 points against the worst team in the NHL. And with 16 seconds left in the game? Give me a [expletive]ing break.

The Flyers traded OK Tollefsen to the Red Wings for Ville Leino. Not really sure where Leino fits onto the roster so I am guessing another trade is coming.

Also, Ray Emery's hip is bothering him again and he is not playing again tonight. [expletive]. At least Leighton has been just as lights out as Razor recently, but still we need him to be "the guy" down the stretch. I guess the Olympic break coming soon is a good thing.

Another note on Emery...I read the other day that the Flyers have had preliminary conversations with Emery's agent about a contract extension. He is without a doubt the most talented goalie the Flyers have had since Ron Hextall, and he has behaved himself all season, so I certainly hope this gets done.
