this is getting insane

Philadelphia Flyers leading goal scorer Jeff Carter(notes) will miss three to four weeks with a broken bone in his left foot.

Carter suffered the injury off a shot from Atlanta’s Clarke MacArthur(notes) in the first period of Sunday night’s 3-1 Thrashers’ win.

When he misses Tuesday night’s game in Ottawa, Carter will end a streak of 286 consecutive games played. That’s the third-longest in team history.

carter is a tough guy too, he doesnt miss games games unless he has to, 286 straight

carter has probably been the best player recently and carrying the team, it is a HUGE loss. i wouldnt be surprised to see the flyers miss the playoffs or barely make it without emery/leighton and carter

I am hoping that Stefan Legein gets called up for the time being. I heard David Laliberte was their first choice, but he is injured now as well. Wouldn't shock me if they don't call anybody up though, and just activate Arron Asham/Ville Leino.

Long story short, the Flyers were robbed of at least 12 minutes of power play time, and the Flyers had an obvious goal taken away by the replay room in Toronto. Anton Volchenkov got away with two plays that would get most players suspended and he didn't even get a 2 minute minor for either (an elbow to Dan Carcillo's head and and drilling Simon Gagne from behind head first into the boards long after Gagne got rid of the puck). There were linesmen staring at both plays too, yet nothing was called. The aftermath of the Gagne play directly led to Ottawa's second goal. The Senators then got a 7 minute power play because Gagne jumped Volchenkov. The fact that Gagne was that pissed off should tell you all you need to know.

the carcillo hit was kinda weird and questionable, but the gagne one absolutely should have been a penalty or more. the announcer is a complete dumbass saying how gagne purposely turned and that it was a great hit. it was far from that. gagne turned early to play the puck, he was already facing the boards completely when he got hit

I thought both hits warranted 5 minute majors, if not more.

So, I cleared up my entire afternoon schedule so I could be hone to watch this. Was not expecting the Flyers to win, but they are playing a good game and the guys in striped shirts are [expletive]ing them yet again. Like I said earlier I do not buy into the conspiracy theories anymore, but damn these officials are trying to get me believing again.

On a serious note, the officials have to start being held accountable for being this horrible.

*Sigh*

Also, Johan Backlund looked pretty good, I thought. Of course he kept with the Flyers goaltending theme and hurt his groin during the 2nd period and had to leave the game.

Well, this sure is interesting...

I know I promised this update postgame last night, but I got a little tied up, but believe me, it'll be worth the wait.

I wrote a second story last night that talked about the Flyers efforts to land Robert Esche this past weekend, only to be thwarted by the remaining months on his Russian contract.

I then mentioned how Esche might be a possibility in the summer. And he still is, but, I had a conversation later in the night, after that story was already written, hinting as to what the Flyers offseason plans might be.

The person I spoke with will remain anonymous, just know that it's someone within the organization who has full knowledge of what the team's personnel decisions and plans are.

Here is what he said to me:

"We can't go into next year with the same situation or a similar situation in goal that we have right now. What happened this year is really nobody's fault. Ray (Emery) came in here and did everything we asked and was good until he got hurt. We got lucky with (Michael) Leighton, but we can't expect to win doing things this way in goal.

"It's already been decided that our No. 1 priority for next season is to get a goalie. We have to go out and get that player and commit to him as our guy.

"It's probably going to mean somebody is going to have to be traded away, especially if we go after a young goalie on another team, but that's what we're going to have to do. We can't keep going the way we have been. The goalie has to be the most important target and we don't want to keep replacing one veteran with another. We want to get a guy who can be our goalie for several years.... We have to go in another direction."

O.K., so names were mentioned there, but when you talk about trading for a young goalie on another team, there's very few places you can look and be excited about what you'll get in return.

There's Antii Niemi in Chicago, although methinks he's going to be their goalie of the future, not Cristobal Huet.

There's Cory Schneider in Vancouver, who is blocked by Roberto Luongo, but keep in mind, Schneider is still a wholly unproven commodity.

Then there's Montreal, where it appears Jaroslav Halak has won out over Carey Price.

Now we're talking.

Price, still just 22, was the fifth overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and burst on the scene two seasons ago going 24-12-3 as a rookie and leading the Habs to the best record in the Eastern Conference until he was completely unnerved and dismantled by R.J. Umberger and the Flyers in the second round of the playoffs.

He endured a sophomore slump last season, but bounced back some this season, but not enough to hold on to his job in the pressure cooker that is Montreal.

So, the Canadiens will likely look to pawn him off this summer, but it could be costly.

Who exactly would have to go back in exchange? Well, that's the key question which answer needs to be fleshed out.

Will the Canadiens take a veteran whom the Flyers' might convince to waive a no trade clause? Or will they want one of the Flyers top young players like Claude Giroux or James van Riemsdyk?

This is all conversation that will be better suited for June than the end of March, but be certain it's coming.

Because another source told me recently:

"A number of these guys (on the Flyers roster) won't be back."

Let the whirlwind speculation begin.

Well, I certainly hope this is true (not necessarily about Halak or Price specifically, but about changing their business plan and finding a young "franchise goalie" to build around. This roster has a lot of talent as currently constructed but is incredibly flawed. I don't know if I can even pin the blame on Paul Holmgren, since this has been a problem for years. GMs have been fired and made out as scapegoats for this many times before, but it's pretty obvious it's an organization problem. They need to build from the goalie out, not the other way around like they've tried to do for the past 20 years or so. As a result we get bad mixes like we have now. A decent amount of very skilled (yet very expensive) forwards, 2 elite defenseman and a huge drop off from there, and an absolute mess in goal. They tried building from the forwards in, and as a result have overpaid for almost all of them and are tight against the cap. They have almost no secondary scoring, and way too many grit/energy guys. I love Ian Laperriere, Arron Asham, Blair Betts, Dan Carcillo, and Darroll Powe, and I think they all have a place on a good hockey team, but the Flyers have way too many guys of that mold and not nearly enough secondary scorers. The overall philosophy of this organization is horrible and it seems like we go through this every season as a result.

I am fed up with this league, honestly. 2 game suspension for Dan Carcillo for a play that doesn't even get looked at twice by the league if it's any other player. But he has a rep so he gets the suspension...

I just really don't get it. Matt Cooke and Anton Volchenkov were guilty in two of the dirtiest plays I have seen all season, yet they don't get a second of penalty time much less a suspension. Dan Carcillo's stick inadvertently hits David Clarkson's face in a scrum and he gets 2 games. Seriously unbelievable. If you watch the video, it's clear his hands were forced up in the air which caused his stick to follow.

Flyers have signed G Sebastien Caron from Swiss League, Holmgren told the DN. If he clears waivers Fri at noon, will join team.

Hallelujah!!![/sarcasm]

Alright, Sebastien Caron cleared waivers and will be in uniform tonight (he will become the 7th goalie to dress for the Flyers this season....wow). Brian Boucher still gets the start, however. Also, Caron is ineligible to play in the postseason since they signed him after the trade deadline. Apparently Johan Backlund may be ready to go on Sunday, so this is going to get very interesting.

One thing is for sure....must win game tonight vs. Montreal.

Halak with the "should have traded for me" statement tonight.

Well...that's all hindsight. If the Flyers could have predicted at the deadline that Leighton was going to hurt his ankle and be done for the year I am sure they would have made a trade, and Halak would have been a strong possibility.

Anyway, I did not see the game since I was next door at the Phillies game, but everything I am reading says the Flyers played a very strong game but Halak was just incredible. Typical.

Yeah the entire third period was pretty much a power play as Montreal couldn't do anything.

I watched Boucher last year because Sharks were always on TSN and he played good but he has almost zero rebound control and it always goes in front rather than off the side.
