fish7718
The White Sox have acquired Toronto outfielder Alex Rios on waivers. Rios is guaranteed $59.7 million from 2010 through 2014. His acquisition has serious financial ramifications for the White Sox, who have four high-profile free agents after this season, most notably right fielder Jermaine Dye and designated hitter Jim Thome. Rios is batting .264 with 14 home runs and 62 RBIs. Rios is expected to join the Sox on Tuesday in Seattle. ESPN.com first reported Friday night that Rios has been claimed by an unnamed team but said the White Sox were the team "most likely" to put the claim on him. Toronto apparently was willing to not receive compensation and award Rios to the White Sox on the waiver claim because they simply ridded themselves of Rios's salary. RealGM Note: After excellent seasons in 2006 and 2007, Rios was nearly sent to the Giants in a trade for Tim Lincecum. His big contract, however, made dealing him for anything valuable in return a troublesome endeavor for the Jays. They have now ridden themselves of his contract in one of baseball's most notable pure salary dumps.Source Damn, now they can compete with the yankees and red sox as well, gonna be a great battle for that WC Edited August 11, 2009 by Fish7718
Phightins
I don't know if this will make up for Ricciardi's Halladay deadline [expletive]up, but losing every penny of Rios's contract without taking a hit back at all is pretty damn impressive. The Great iBoldin
Source Damn, now they can compete with the yankees and red sox as well, gonna be a great battle for that WC Rios isn't going to propel Chicago into real contention just with him, because he's been brutal for most of the year. Although the White Sox brass has coveted Rios since about two years ago, so it's a good deal for both sides.
