Happy Ramadan!

Right, I got that. I'm asking why it calls for a month of recognition. Most holidays are just that; a day.

Ramadan isn't really considered a holiday, it's considered a Holy Month. Unlike American holidays, we're not partying or having a great time, we're focusing on our religion.

...Perhaps I'm being unclear. I fully understand the purpose, the history, the desired effect, etc. of Ramadan. I want to know:

Why do you observe it for a time period of one month?

The belief is that our Holy Book the Qur'an was sent down to us during this month. So thats why we do it for the whole month.

You mean, throughout the course of the month? If so, then it makes sense. But if the Qur'an was sent down on a particular day, then why revere a whole month instead of just that day?

Ramadan was the first month in which the Religion of Islam started up.

The Qur'an was actually revealed piece by piece. The first revelations were in Ramadan, though they kept on coming afterwards.

I don't think it's observed because of the revelation or based on any occurrence, Ramadan is just considered a holy month, though I may be wrong.

And Ramadan Mubarak.
