My NBA 2k10: Draft Combine Review

Well I just played the game for almost 2 hours, and I have a lot of good things to say about this game. There are a few minor annoyances, but overall this is definitely fun.

Create a Player

Pros:

  • Indepth create a player feature. They actually look human this year.
  • Additional signature styles and categories add to the deepness of the create a player feature. You can pretty much find your complete style in the game.
  • Sig shots have been improved from last years. Kobe, Rashard Lewis, and Ray Allen have much better shots this year, to name a few people.
  • A lot of new accessories such as finger straps, and much more shoes with a new custom coloring option for them.
  • You can actually set your weight in this year's game, and your body shape adjusts to the amount of weight your player has.

Cons:

  • No matter how you make your character, there is always that "default look" to the face. The changes you make aren't very major, it's basically just moving parts around rather than completely changing them.
  • More hairstyles, but they still don't look very good on the players. They look almost 2-dimensional and painted on.

Gameplay

Pros:

  • Shot animations have improved immensely. Players look like they actually move properly into their own shot, instead of jumping into the set animation out of no where like in the previous versions.
  • The passing rating seems to play a factor this year. In previous titles, you could easily get 15 assists with almost any guard in the league, no matter what their rating was. Now you really need a good rating to be a successful passer, or you'll pay the consequence of an embarassing turnover when you try to make those highlight reel passes to one of your teammates.
  • Fatigue plays a much bigger factor. Not only does using the turbo deplete your energy, but using the left trigger to defend more aggressively does as well. You need to use your player's energy wisely.
  • Defense is much better. No more corny lock on defense, you need to really get up in your defenders face and lock him down. The left trigger still helps with that, but it's not as ridiculous looking as it was in the last 2 years.
  • WAY WAY WAY too many kickball violations. There were 6 of them called in a 20 minute game.

Cons:

  • Player movement is horrible. Getting your player from point A to B is a real struggle, and even though your player is supposed to have a low rating, the lack of speed and coordination in every player trying out for the NBA is just ridiculous.
  • Your teammates are horrible. When you are running the point and your objective is to get 3 assists in 4 quarters at 5 minute each, that sounds easy. It is extremely difficult because even when your teammate is open, they will most likely miss their shot. They have to be REALLY open to make the shot.

Presentation

Pros:

  • Music is great. There's only a few tracks in the DC, but I liked them all. The last 2 titles have had horrible music, but the songs this year look promising.
  • The 2k Insider does a good job talking you through your experiences, saying what you are doing right and doing wrong.
  • The court looks great and spaced out, the whole environment looks great.

Cons:

  • None

Overall, it's definitely a fun downloadable game, and it will be a fun add on to pass the time until the release of the full game. I recommend downloading it. For 5 bucks, you really can't go wrong.

Added one more Con to the gameplay I forgot about. Kickball violations occur way too frequently... like WAY too frequently. I think I see one of those violations like once every 10 pro games I watch.

Not to nitpick but the kickball violation is under pros.

Very nice job. Thanks for the quality review....definitely want this game.

Would you say the gameplay is better than 2k9?

It's definitely smoother, but remember the producers said that it was more like a 2k9.5 since a lot of animations aren't in DC. Plus we're playing with a player who starts off rated 38 overall so everyone moves super slow.

As for the kickball violations, I'm glad they were added, but they just occur way too frequently. It's not even me that's doing it most of the time haha, it's my teammates trying to do a bounce pass to my center down low and every time it even skims an opposing player's leg, they call the violation. I'm sure it'll be polished up in 2k10 and we won't see it too often. Overall though, 2k10 looks promising, considering this is only 2k9.5 and I really enjoyed it.

I started over, playing as a short point guard was boring and too hard lol. :P

Now I'm a 6'5 all around shooting guard, and somehow averaging 32.3 ppg, 4.7 apg, and 2.3 rpg over the course of 4 games. I'm projected to be drafted 9th overall in the second round at the moment, with multiple drills, scrimmages, and combine games to spare. :D

im at a lowly 4 PPG, 4 RPG, and 6 APG after 2 games :/. Projected to be picked dead last by the LAKERS <_<(idc as long as im drafted, but cmon, LA? <_<)

Hahaha it's so hard to play with a short player. My original point guard was 6'2 and I could barely pass the ball, let alone score. Now I made an athletic 6'5 shooting guard and I'm tearing it up right now. B)

But that does suck to be a projected draft pick by the Lakers in your case.

You guys think i would be picked by Lakers if im a SG?

Doubtful, you have to REALLY suck to be drafted below the 20th pick in the 2nd round. I'm projected 8th in the 2nd right now with a few games left along with plenty of drills and scrimmages that I haven't played yet. I'm trying to break into the 1st round, and reading over at the 2k forums, that's apparently rare so we'll see. :)

So being a PG i would have a higher chance?

Position doesn't really matter. You can have high success with any position. I'm just dominating with my shooting guard at the moment. If you don't like what you're seeing with your first player, delete your game save and start from scratch like I did. I'm really glad I did, I was doing horrible with my 6'2 point guard (yeah, I even added 2 inches to my height and still couldn't do anything haha).

Well i have a chance of getting picked by them if im really good though ^.^

Oh I see what you're saying lol, you WANT to be drafted later by the Lakers haha. Well I guess you could do intentionally bad, but that's no fun considering how much time you have to put in to complete the entire combine haha.
