Cobb
MLB.com The Giants reportedly are the team that put in a waiver claim on Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman this week, although the possibility of a trade remains remote. An ESPN.com report Friday said the Giants made the claim, perhaps for their own, or perhaps to block the Dodgers and Rockies, their rivals in the NL West race, from claiming Hoffman themselves. Major League executives are barred from discussing waivers, so Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has not commented on Hoffman's situation. Hoffman pitched a perfect ninth inning in Wednesday's extra-innings loss to the Reds and has been excellent in his first season away from San Diego in 16 years, posting a 1.85 ERA and 27 saves in 29 chances this year. But he's had only four save opportunities this month and only four appearances over the past two weeks. With Hoffman on a one-year contract and projecting as a Type A free agent, the Brewers stand to gain compensatory draft picks if they keep him through the season and another team signs him next winter.
