ManOnTheMoon
Is it any surprise that this week's top Apple news revolved around Snow Leopard? It turns out that the updated OS has built-in malware protection, Adobe CS3 will work on it (but it won't be supported), and the $29 upgrade disk will work for everyone—even though the EULA forbids using it unless you have Leopard. There are also new Mac ads and some legal drama, so read on to catch the highlights. Be sure to look for our Snow Leopard review on Monday. Critics call shenanigans after Apple, AT&T letters to FCC: Everyone is puzzling over Apple and AT&T's letters to the FCC about the apparent rejection of a Google Voice iPhone app. Ars peers through the holes in their version of the mess. Adobe Creative Suite and Snow Leopard: what you should know: Adobe has drawn the line in the sand between Intel and PPC for upcoming versions of its Creative Suite, and now it's doing so again between CS3 and CS4 when it comes to Snow Leopard support. It might not please everyone, but that's the price some of us pay for staying on the cutting edge. Poll Technica: 5M copies of Snow Leopard? Will you upgrade? Snow Leopard has finally arrived, and Analyst Gene Munster thinks Apple will sell 5 million copies of Mac OS X 10.6 before fiscal 4Q ends at the end of September, but we think he's being too conservative. Let us know what you think in our latest poll. New Get a Mac ads beat dead PC virus horse, waste good jokes: Apple brought in voice and character actor Patrick Warburton for one of its latest Get a Mac ads, but the constant berating of PCs for virus and "headaches" is getting a little trite. MacBook on life support, but Apple not pulling the plug yet: The lonely white polycarbonate MacBook that still remains in Apple's otherwise all-aluminum notebook lineup hasn't changed significantly over the years. The latest rumor suggests that Apple is working to change that. Recent Apple patent apps hint at future iPhone improvements: Some newly published patent applications from Apple show easy file and data transfers while a call is in progress, as well as an auto-speakerphone feature, easily adaptable connectors, and an improved shock sensor. Jobs on top of every detail of iTablet, according to rumors: Another day, another Apple tablet rumor. Numerous sources "familiar with the matter" claim to have information on Steve Jobs' involvement in the project, while Jobs says many of those details are "incorrect." Snow Leopard includes rudimentary malware protection: Apple likes to tout Mac OS X's lack of malware, but it isn't completely immune. It's nice to know the company is taking an active role in preventing it from becoming a problem for users. $29 Snow Leopard retail disc will install over Tiger: It looks like Apple has "conceded" that it's possible to install Mac OS X 10.6 straight on to a Mac with 10.4 installed, despite Apple's official stance that a Mac Box Set is required to do so. That doesn't automatically mean that you should, though. 5th Ave Apple Store still rockin' through the recession: Apple's 5th Avenue retail store continues to pack in crowds and move millions in merchandise every year. Sales are so good even in this slow economy that Apple continues to expand its retail operations. , waiting for my Snow Leopard to ship in. ^_^
