Rubio Could Be Getting Closer To NBA

A source briefed on the talks said David Kahn's continued presence in Spain could be taken as an indication that the odds of Rick Rubio coming to the Wolves next season had improved.

It has been six days since several Spanish media outlets reported an agreement was in place for Joventut to trade Rubio's rights to FC Barcelona for 3.7 million Euros ($5.28 million), and for Rubio to sign a six-year contract with an "affordable" buyout in 2011.

But a source told ESPN.com last Wednesday that "it's not over yet," and that remained the status quo heading into Monday.

what is this with he isn't ready? i think he has the most potential and is already probably top 2 in this draft. plus he is annoying everybody. we all want to see him play. i think david kahn is going to help this franchise a LOT. i like his attitude from what i've seen (which is numerous articles and some video chat thing during the draft).

Whatever. I hope he can improve his weaknesses in those 2 years.

Good point, actually...but I would think that playing in the pros would help that a little better than not coming over when he can.

I don't see why Rubio couldn't manage to get just ONE deal from someone like Nike or Adidas, anything of the sort. That would've taken care of the problem with the buyout.

Well, it may differ for anyone.

I think he was bound to have a few endorsements, but he decided to stay in Spain for 2 more years.

Here:

He told Timberwolves president David Kahn on Monday night that he wanted to stay in Spain for the next two years to better prepare for life in the NBA.

Kahn said Rubio's agent, Dan Fegan, delivered a package of endorsement deals and sponsorships that helped make the NBA deal attractive enough for Rubio and Joventut to enter into an agreement on Saturday night.

Kahn said Rubio and his family were receiving pressure from his Spanish national team teammates, members of the Spanish media and other people in their hometown to stay in Spain.

"The reason leading me to take this next step is to have a period of preparation to better take the challenge of the NBA in better conditions as a player," Rubio said in a statement. "The Minnesota Timberwolves continue to be my first option and I wish to play with them in the near future."
