Pats ship mainstay Seymour to Raiders for '11 first-rounder

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have traded five-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders for a first-round draft pick in 2011.

The sixth overall pick in the 2001 draft, Seymour was a mainstay of a Patriots defense that won three Super Bowls. He had eight sacks last season.

The deal was first reported by ESPN on Sunday.

WOW...

Raiders are [expletive]ing idiots. Pats are geniuses again. They ship out a 30 yr old, whom they really don't even need to win (they won without him during the almost "perfect" season), and will probably get a top 5 pick in the 2011 draft.

I have no idea how this trade makes sense for the Raiders. Seymour is a good player, yes. But he's an aging player, on a team that's going nowhere. Wouldn't you rather have a top 5 pick? lmao

Terrible trade for the Raiders. They have little to no chance at competing right now, so this move makes zero sense for them. Seymour will most likely show a decline and this will go down as one of the worst trades in recent memory. New England will get a nice piece to continue building their dynasty with.

I read that Seymour has 1 year left on his contract (can someone verify?). If that's true than LMAO. I don't see any reason why he'd want to stay in Oakland when his contract is up. If Al Davis traded a top 5 pick away for a 1 year rental, on a team that won't come close to making the playoffs... well actually I wouldn't be surprised at all.

I don't know. First reaction says that the Pats got a steal. Second reaction is that maybe Oakland, with Seymour, may not (no, seriously) actually be too bad this year. Seriously.

In the future it's a steal for the Pats, though. Seymour is a declining 3-4 defensive end who has two years productivity, max. And, if you review some of New England's games throughout the last two years, Ty Warren has been the better of the two ends, not Seymour.

He can still provide the run stopping that Oakland needs, though. I believe they're bringing in Alfonso Boone to take over NT on run downs, giving them a look of:

Ellis - Kelly - Boone - Seymour

Passing downs would probably look like this:

Ellis - Kelly - Seymour - Shaughnessy

I think the Pats' win this though. Who knows. Bellichick probably ends up trading the pick.

EDIT - I forgot about Trevor Scott. He'll find his way into the rotation.

There's no way this trade makes sense for Oakland. Seymour is a UFA after this season. There's a zero percent chance he comes back, unless we somehow win 8-9 games. Not with Russell as QB. Not with Al Davis coaching.

Well that pick is still two years away. Anything can happen in that time frame. Look at Atlanta, look at Miami or even Arizona to some degree.

I think it's nonsense to be calling this pick a top-ten selection when we're two years away. I don't think it matters what franchise.

Well, the possibility that Al Davis is still alive in 2011 is pretty high, which means he'll still be coaching the team from the box, which means we'll never win more than seven games.

It's the Raiders. Arizona found their franchise player in Fitz. The Falcons have a QB that can potentially be the clear-cut best in the NFL in a few years. All of those teams found a way to do that via draft.

The Raiders can't draft (Huff, Russell, DHB). If we knew how to draft franchise players, we'd be better off. McFadden may never be a franchise player.

In fact, I thank God we somehow got lucky with Nnamdi Asomugha, but he's not going to make up for our pathetic offensive line, our lack of receivers, and our terrible coaching and ownership.

By the way, you can see why I don't discuss much football. I feel like I know the sport quite a bit, but good God, when you hate your owner and you have no faith in your offense, you really don't have much to talk about.
