The Bellingham Slam have announced that forward Tyler Amaya has been invited to a workout with the NBA's Houston Rockets. Amaya is in Houston this week training with several of the Rockets' coaches and players, including Yao Ming and former Pac-10 stars Aaron Brooks and Chase Budinger.

Amaya is coming off a superb sophomore season with the Slam in which he led the team in both scoring an rebounding, with averages of 23.6 points and 11.1 boards per game. In 2008, he was instrumental in helping the Slam capture the International Basketball League championship. Last winter, Amaya suited up for the Guangdong Southern Tigers, a top team in the Chinese Basketball Association.

A graduate of Western Washington, Amaya helped lead the Vikings to back-to-back NCAA-II West Regional Tournament appearances in 2005 and 2006. He averaged 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game during his senior season at WWU.

While his workout with the Rockets is unlikely to result in a contract offer from the squad, training with NBA-caliber talent will aid Amaya as he continue his career in either the NBA's Development League or with a team overseas.

The Rockets reached agreement on non-guaranteed contracts with guards Will Conroy and Garrett Temple, players who excelled with the Rockets summer league team and who will help round out the training camp roster, Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said.

Both would be considered longshots to make the Rockets regular-season roster, with forward/center Pops Mensah-Bonsu the most likely of the players with non-guaranteed players to stick with the team heading into the season.

The Rockets are not likely to sign either until shortly before players must report Sept. 28, though Temple has been working out with the Rockets training staff throughout the summer and Conroy joined the workouts on Friday.

Temple was undrafted out of LSU after last season. Conroy, a 6-2 point guard, was a first-team All NBA-Development League team player, averaging 26.5 points and setting the D-League record of 53 points in a game. The all-time assists leader at the University of Washington, he has had brief stints in the NBA with the Los Angeles Clippers and Memphis Grizzlies.

Barring other changes, the Rockets would have 19 players under contract when Conroy and Temple sign. With two of their three centers – Joey Dorsey and Mensah-Bonsu – also working at power forward, the Rockets could also add a center before training camp.

Will Conroy wouldn't be a bad fit, we don't have a third PG atm. He averaged 26 and 8 in the d-league. Including a game where he had 27pts, 9 boards and 18 dimes.

Rockets have a lot of tough decisions coming there way. I think Barry, Temple, White and most likely will be cut/traded.
