One Defensive Player...

Depends on the system.

4-3 defense, I probably end up taking a dominant end like Mario Williams, or anyone along the defensive line, like Albert Haynesworth. Someone who's going to make easy for linebackers to flow to the football, and make plays. Rarely do you want a cornerback. Shutdown corners almost come a dime a dozen. Look at Brandon Flowers last year, fantastic in the Tampa 2 as a rookie. Asomugha is a quality player, but you can get by with average corners.

In a 3-4, Universe made a quality call with Vince Wilfork. A true nose tackle makes it so easy for your linebackers to flow to the ball. Wilfork takes on double teams all game. Him or Haloti Ngata, actually.

Polamalu and Reed are equal. No way one is better than the other in an overall sense surrounding their position. Polamalu is a strong safety who is known to stuff the run but also has capability to be an all-around player with his pass defense. Reed on the other hand is a very good free safety and during his glory days, could probably knock the [expletive] out of 5 players on one tackle.

Anyway, I'd have to say the best defensive player right now is Ngata or Wilfork. Both allow their respective teams to play the 3-4, because they are so [expletive]ing insane against the run/at the NT position. DeMarcus Ware is also up there in terms of impact.

Polamalu doesn't have a position. He lines up, free of the scheme, where the defense needs him, makes plays, and dominates. And that versatility you alluded to exactly why I prefer him over Reed — he's able to cover the deep zones with comparable instincts to Reed, man up tight ends, and is phenomenal in the box. He excels at everything, including what Reed excels at. Polamalu impacts the game more.
