La Bomba
Hall of Fame basketball coach Dr. Jack Ramsay's presence during Grizzlies training camp has meant a couple of things to the players. They've received valuable tutoring from a legend. And the Grizzlies realize their coach continues to be coached. Ramsay, 84, led Lionel Hollins and the 1977 Portland Trail Blazers to an NBA title. Hollins still considers his first NBA coach a mentor, and has leaned on Ramsay for advice over the past two days. "He's forgotten more basketball than all of my staff put together," Hollins said. "He knows the ins and outs because he's coached on every level. It always feels good to have people around that know the game and that you respect. "You need mentors in this world, not just in business. Having a guy who has meant so much to the game of basketball to say I'll come and watch a couple of days of training camp is big." Hollins values Ramsay's opinion so much that he traveled to New Jersey and spent two days with him in July. Ramsay, now a broadcaster for ESPN, ranks eighth all-time on the list of NBA games coached. Ramsay's best advice to Hollins was for him to focus on teaching fundamentals. The Griz focused mostly on drills and have hardly scrimmaged. http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/2009/oct/04/griz-get-tips-from-legend/
