Rudy Fuming Over Portland's Pursuit Of Turkoglu

Recommended Posts

As Portland pursues Hedo Turkoglu, they have angered Rudy Fernandez in the process, according to sources.

Fernandez would prefer to play in Greece, Russia or even Spain again.

A league source told ESPN.com that Fernandez has already been courted informally by European powerhouses Olympiacos, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and CSKA Moscow.

Fernandez, who paid more than $500,000 of his own money to buy his way out of his contract with DKV Joventut, believes he can earn 5 million euros per season if he signs a three-year contract in Europe. He is due to make $1.1 million from the Blazers next season.

The problem for Fernandez from a leverage standpoint is that he is entering the second year of his NBA rookie contract, and the Blazers have the option to re-sign him for a third and/or fourth season. Fernandez would have to be released from his NBA contract in order to receive a letter of clearance from FIBA.

The Blazers have been made aware of Fernandez's feelings, the source said.

This guy is a really good player and it was only his first year in the league and he quickly adjusted to it. He's not dumb he knows bringing Turkoglu in means a lot less playing time and the Europeans care more about the game and playing with heart than money, that's why their so special. I guess Turkoglu after all these seasons became more American.

Can't blame him for being angry. He was already a total draft steal as it was, trying to make a name for himself, which he has. But bringing in Turk would definitely ruin his chances at making some noise as a starting forward.

I would want him to stay and scratch the plans for Turkoglu, however Turkoglu gives Portland that much needed 2nd go to scorer from the perimeter which they lack, they have Aldridge and Oden who is surprisingly becoming a threat in the post .. they just need that 2nd perimeter go to scorer to blow up ..

Brandon Roy anybody? Unless, you're saying they need another perimetre threat, and then yeah, I guess Turkoglu fits.

But what startles me is Turk is 30..the rest of the team is 24ish..they're not close to reaching their ceiling and once they do, Turk will be like 33. Why sign him?

Rudy's Displeasure Comes As A Surprise To Blazers

The Trail Blazers were surprised to learn of Rudy Fernandez's displeasure of their Hedo Turkoglu pursuit.

"I just spoke with Rudy two days ago, to see how he was doing, and he said he was doing fine and that he was happy,'' Nate McMillan said. "I talked to him about our moves, and how we did in the draft, and why we did what we did in the draft and he was fine with it. We talked about Sergio (Rodriguez) and he was OK with everything we've done.''

Kevin Pritchard said he "had a good conversation" with Fernandez on Monday.

"We joked around,'' Pritchard said. "And we had a fantastic exit interview. He talked about how excited he was to come back.''

Pritchard said he has not spoken with Fernandez since the ESPN report came out Wednesday afternoon, but he did leave a message for Fernandez to call him.

"The thing with Nate and I is we respect players - we both played - and we are always willing to talk,'' Pritchard said. "So if there really is an issue, we want him to know that we are open to talk about it.''
