Owner Real Deal Posted October 27, 2009 Owner Report Share Posted October 27, 2009 Hmm... Rajon Rondo will not sign a contract extension with the Boston Celtics, allowing him to join next summer’s heralded free-agent class, the player’s agent told Yahoo! Sports late Monday. Rondo and the Celtics have until Saturday to negotiate an extension, but his agent, Bill Duffy, said the point guard has already made a decision to become a restricted free agent at the end of the season. Duffy said he has had recent talks with the Celtics about Rondo, but the negotiations never progressed enough to lead him to believe the sides were close to a deal. Celtics president Danny Ainge couldn’t be reached for comment. “We’re not going to do an extension right now,” Duffy said. “The conversation has been cordial. We’ve been talking the last couple of weeks. There is a difference between the perception of him in their eyes and our eyes. With that being said, the focus is on Rajon to have a fantastic season and concentrate on winning a championship.”http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Ar0cQyKHXgCvjBv8NICT_9G8vLYF?slug=mc-rondoceltics102609&prov=yhoo&type=lgns
Klashnekoff
This will be the Celtics final year i say to be on top. 2010-2011 season comes around i guarantee Rondo is gone as the Celtics won't be able to match a crazy offer someone will throw at him .. Jenneral
I think Rondo's making a big mistake here. He's really not as good as he seems. Much of it is due to the stars he has around him. Due to this, I don't think he really deserves to demand the big money. He'll probably end up going to a mediocre team that desperately needs a PG and will throw money at his like it's nothing. That's when everyone will see how important everyone around him was to his success - including himself.
Poe
I think people are degrading Rondo's abilities because of the players that surround him. Rondo will be a great player for any team.
Celtics3420
smh at dude wanting MAX money. Its cool though, we wont let him walk considering he's our future. Thats the key, he's a restricted FA, so im not worried.
BlueDevil
i wouldnt worry too much if i were the Celtics. They both need each other. Rondo needs to stay cuz he looks better as the 4th option. If he went elsewhere, he would be a 2nd option probably and would most likely see his numbers drop. Its the same as Ariza with Houston now. If that turns out well, maybe Rondo will have something. But most likely its in his best interest to stay.
Dr. Feelgood
He definitely does not deserve to be making around the same amount as Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Steve Nash, or Tony Parker. I do think this is a mistake on his part as they offered about the amount he should be getting. He's acting as if he's a 20ppg franchise player. He's not and he needs to realize that. Celtics3420
A source close to the situation has told Jeff Goodman of WEEI.com and FoxSports.com that the Celtics’ offered point guard Rajon Rondo a contract extension worth five years and $45 million, with Rondo’s representatives asking for between $55-60 million over the same number of years. The Celtics presented their offer to Rondo’s reps in a meeting, Monday night. Rondo is eligible to become a restricted free agent at the end of the 2009-10 season. click me These were the numbers being discussed. Wow man, 9 mill is what we offered, and it's the exact number i was thinking for Rondo. However, he want's 2-3 mill more annually than what was offered. Quit being a dick and accept this offer Rondo -_-

If he puts up anything close to what he did during the playoffs last year, then there should be at least one team in the league willing to give that kind of money, and it will be up to the Celtics to match it. I think financially, Rondo is making the right decision.
Klashnekoff
There are a lot of teams that can use him, pay him more and develop him into a all-star. The Celtics are holding him back because of their big three and he knows it. Don't even attempt to tell me that he isn't on the brink of being a all-star after what he did in the playoffs last year. If people can be so convinced in Rose being the next big thing in terms of point guards then why can't Rondo who has proven and achieved much more then Rose obviously. No way we're holding him back. Statistically(points) speaking? Maybe, but we put him into a winning situation, he may be a 4th scoring option, maybe even 5th, but to say that's holding him back is just absurd. Playing with these guys has definitely helped Rondo(not to say theyre the only reason he's successful) Who's saying he's not on the brink of being an all-star? We know he is, but you dont pay for potential, you pay for results(Andrew Bynum is one example of that). Yes, Rondo has produced, and yes, he deserves good money, and 9 mill for a borderline All Star atm is the perfect amount. Paying him CP/Deron money when he's not even on their level yet is just ignorant on any team's part.
Poe
^ I agree that the players around Rondo have definitely helped him start out his career and develop into what he's becoming. Rondo wants the most money he can get, and he knows the Celtics need him. Going into free agency is his chance to gain the most possible. Whether he deserves it or not is what he's going to try to prove this year, and it will be up to the coaches around the league to find out if he's truly worth it. Sun Tzu
I don't think his going to get that much money, I think he should just stay with the Celtics.
ChosenOne
The boy is going to make bank in the 2010 FA class. Great move on his part. I think the Celtics might let Allen walk to keep him around.

Erick Blasco
Just adding the source for the extension news:The Celtics' $55 million game of poker with Rajon Rondo is over. After two weeks of posturing, the two sides have agreed to a five-year extension that will keep the point guard from becoming a restricted free agent next summer, a person familiar with the situation told CBSSports.com on Monday. The $55 million extension came hours before a midnight Tuesday deadline for 2006 draft picks to sign extensions with their current teams. The lone high-profile holdout is Rudy Gay, whose representatives have continued to work with GM Chris Wallace on getting a deal done.
