Sources: Artest Unlikely To Return To Rockets

Ron Artest could be departing the Houston Rockets after just one season with the team.

"NBA sources told FOX 26 Sports Wednesday it is unlikely free agent forward Ron Artest will return to the Houston Rockets."

"League sources told FOX 26 the Rockets would be willing to offer Artest a one-year contract at best. The sources said because of that the chances of Artest resigning with Houston are remote."

Kobe speaking to Artest

If LeBron James or Kobe Bryant are looking for a little help, Ron Artest is taking calls

The Rockets star forward, an unrestricted free agent, will consider a team's chances of winning an NBA championship when deciding where he'll bring his skills next season, his agent says. David Bauman said Wednesday that his client would like to return to Houston, but Artest would also think about signing with a contending team -- and that might rule out the Rockets if Yao Ming's broken left foot keeps him out for the season.

Bauman wouldn't say which teams have contacted him about Artest. But he said he would expect Artest to talk to James and Bryant if the Cavaliers or Lakers teams were interested in him.

"All the superstars are very savvy and great recruiters," Bauman said. "The superstars are sometimes even better recruiters than the general managers or their staffs. Between Kobe and Ron or LeBron and Ron, there are always conversations that occur. I think I'll just leave it at that at this point."

Source: Artest might become a Laker

If the Lakers are unable to sign Odom or Ariza, they might pursue Houston forward Ron Artest, who made $7.4 million last season but became more attractive to the Rockets almost overnight amid reports that center Yao Ming might miss next season because of a broken foot.

Artest, 29, sat courtside for some Lakers home playoff games but would probably have to take a pay cut to play for a team that is conscious of the luxury-tax penalties looming in the future.

This is a deal that L.A. need to jump on, i said this before. The Lakers need to make a move like this to be considered a finals contender, at the moment it looks like the Spurs, Magic and Celtics are strong contenders to make the finals which leaves L.A. out by a tad because they haven't made any moves yet.. this will make them a contender for sure ..

Artest and Kobe can fight while Ariza and LeBron win rings. This is a dream come true if we get him and LA gets Ron.

  Are you serious? LeBron will not be winning rings anytime so. When LA get's Artest & Odom the rest of the league will be shaking in there boots.

Confusion follows 'farewell tweet' from Rockets' Artest

While the Rockets made their pursuit of a center their initial free agent priority, there was a brief, but alarming sign that Ron Artest was ready to move on.

It was a false alarm. A message attributed to Artest — "THANKS A LOT HOUSTON  I HAD A LOT OF FUN." — appeared on Twitter late Wednesday. Artest’s agent, David Bauman, said that the message was sent by an imposter.

"That is not Ron’s account," Bauman said. "That’s what happens with the so-called new media."

Bauman had said on Tuesday that Artest’s "first choice" was to return to Houston. Although Bauman would not discuss anything about talks with general managers, he and the Rockets were not expected to begin negotiations until today at the earliest while the Rockets made their pursuit of Orlando center Marcin Gortat their first step in free agency.

No offers of any kind were expected to be exchanged either way before Bauman had more information about the market for Artest.

Artest averaged 17.1 points on 40.1 percent shooting, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 assists last season, initially coming off the bench when Tracy McGrady and Shane Battier were healthy but then picking up an increasingly important role throughout the season after McGrady was unable to come back from his knee problems.

The Rockets had traded last season’s first-round acquisition, Donte’ Greene, and this season’s first-round selection to get Artest.

Take it for what's it worth.
