Reports: Artest to sign with Lakers

ATLANTA (SI.com) -- The Los Angeles Lakers are close to reaching an agreement with Houston forward Ron Artest, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Artest, an unrestricted free agent, is expected to agree to terms Thursday after spending the day meeting with Lakers executives.

CBS Sports.com's Ken Berger is also reporting Ron Artest is poised to sign with the Lakers.

"I'm definitely going to L.A. -- to sign, yeah," Artest said. "Lakers, Lakers, Lakers. I'm in L.A. right now."

Artest, 29, averaged 17.1 points per game last season with Houston.

Ireland: Artest Told Kobe He Was Coming To L.A.

After Kobe Bryant and Ron Artest got into that, "war of words" in March back in Houston, I asked Kobe what he really thought of Artest.

"We're friends," Kobe said, "I like him a lot--like his game--always have."

Then he told me a story that makes today's news--Artest is supposedly on his way to LA for three years, $18 million--very likely to happen.

Kobe said that after the Lakers lost game six of the '08 NBA Finals in Boston by 39 points, he was alone in the shower, just fuming. He heard somebody walk in and assumed it was one of his teammates, or maybe a staff member. Instead, he looked up, and it was Ron Artest (to this day, Kobe has no idea how Artest got into the locker room).

"I want to come help you," Artest said. "If I can, I'm going to find a way to come to LA and give you the help you need to win a title."

I'll be sure to bump this when Artest shoots 3-16 in a playoff game.

Tnx for Ariza btw.

Lol Artest wont even be shooting 16 times in the playoffs. He knows his role, hes not going to force shots. In Houston he had to force shots sometimes. You keep thinking that Artest is going to come in here and destroy the team, ruin chemistry, take bad shots, and disrupt everything. Thats not going to happen, him and Kobe get along just fine, in fact Artest ADMIRES Kobe. Artest and Odom are friends since childhood, and Artest admires Phil as well. Ron said he already spoke to Phil before agreeing to a contract, without a doubt he understands his role. You always wished Kobe would get injured, it never happened, and now you wish Artest will destroy the Lakers, that wont happen either.

I dont know what to say. On one hand we get a great defender, but I question his shooting and I dont understand how we will manage to share the ball amongst Kobe, Artest, Pau, and a healthy Bynum. And then on the other hand this pretty much means that we wont be resigning Ariza which makes me really mad; I love the dude (no homo). I was hoping to keep Ariza around so that we could stay a little young, but I guess the Lakers are really trying to focus on a couple more championships rather than their future.

Take away the basketball focus and that seems like an eerie gay porn scene

Artest baby!!!

He's coming in here running the Triangle. He's not coming in here in a freelance offense, so the concerns with his offensive disruption need to be set aside. We don't rely on dribble penetration as much as other teams, so he's not going to be dribbling the clock out every other possession.

In the games that McGrady played this past season, Artest was at 13 FG/game. In McGrady's absence, he was at 16.5 FG/game. That's easily attributed to having to pick up the slack.

This is a big win for us on both sides of the ball. Training camp can't come fast enough ;)

No matter where a player is traded he will not change what he does on offense. Rafer has always been a terrible shooter, he goes to the Magic he is still a [expletive]ty shooter, thats why the Lakers left him open a lot in the finals, the guy just doesnt know how to shoot and Rafer was visibly one of the reasons they got owned so bad in the playoffs. Artest will find ways to shoot 16 times and he will force up shots. He may be friends with the Laker players, but that doesnt matter at all, he will force shots, he will still be a ball-stopper and he will be an offensive free lancer. He also did terrible in the playoffs vs the Lakers. He may be good defensively and get steals, but what he does on offense doesnt make the defense seem that good. Just warning you, dont get TOO happy about getting Artest, you may be joyful but if you get too happy you'll just get set up for another let-down. Stay optimistic, not too optimistic, knowwhatibsayinB?

Adelman's offense wasn't a freelance offense, Artest was/is the freelancer. That's the root of the problem. You assume he'll adhere to the triangle and the Kobe-offense, when he's probably more inclined to stagnate ball movement by 'probing' the defense for 20 seconds, and then uncorking an ugly fadeaway.

Artest's deference to McGrady didn't improve his shot selection, he just took less shots because there were less shots. He still had the most shots per minute on the team.

You just signed a player that did just that when he was traded to the Lakers. Might wanna go back and check out some old Magic and Knicks games.

I'm sure I can give you many more players that fall into place, also.

I didn't say Houston ran a freelance offense, but in any case, their offense allows more dribble interaction from more players than does our offense, which is why I'm not worried.

As far as his deference to McGrady, the offense still plays a role in that. He will not have as many opportunities to choose his shot selection when he's in the Tri.
