Rich Hofmann: Phillies should start building for next year, starting with acquiring Halladay

AFTER THE STING wears off and everybody gets a couple of nights' sleep, the quiet pride in the accomplishment of making it to a second consecutive World Series will envelop Phillies' general manager Ruben Amaro Jr., and all of them. They should be given some time to enjoy it, too - especially the general manager who is just finishing his first season. Because it was Amaro who brought Raul Ibanez here and it was Amaro who brought Cliff Lee here. They were huge moves, winning moves, and the general manager deserves an opportunity to bask in the whole thing for a good little while.

What to do to this roster for the 2010 season is the subject that will consume Phillies fans for the next 3 months - and you can spin it any number of ways. Retooling the bullpen is an annual adventure for most teams and it is for this team. Fortifying the bench, especially with a reliable righthanded bat and possibly with somebody whom manager Charlie Manuel can trust enough to give middle infielders Jimmy Rollins and especially Chase Utley an occasional rest, is also a priority.

But if you watched this World Series . . . if you watched this streaky Phillies lineup go cold against the Yankees . . . if you watched it and weighted it all, it is not hard to come up with a different priority list.

And so, you wonder if it isn't time to reopen the Roy Halladay conversation.

We all remember how it went down in July. Toronto general manager J.P. Ricciardi very publicly shopped Halladay, his ace, whose contract expires after the 2010 season and who wants to win a championship, something likely to elude the Blue Jays for a while. Halladay turned into a municipal obsession in Philadelphia, but Amaro would not part with the wagon-load of talent that Ricciardi demanded. Instead, he made the Cliff Lee deal and was celebrated as hitting the perfect balance between present and future, fortifying his team without gutting his farm system.

I think you might see the Yankees involved with Roy as well. I wasn't a fan of the 3 man rotation we used in the playoffs and adding a guy like Halladay would be a big get for us. Although I think we might just wait till after next year when he becomes a FA.

From what I hear the Yankees are staying put with their group and won't be big in FA this year.

The Phils would have to include Drabek. I'm all for it.

However I think Drabek is a starter next year for us.

I agree to an extent there. We still need to find a DH assuming Hideki retires. I think that will put us in play for a few guys but a trade for Halladay is definitely not happening for us. I think we'll wait till his contract expires to make a run at him.

Hopefully he doesn't sign an extension anytime soon.

Check this out.

The Yankees found $181 million lying around last offseason, and made a late, victorious bid to corral Mark Teixeira, so never say never when it comes to the Yankees and spending. But the initial read as the winter bazaar opens is that the Yankees do not intend to make a play for the three biggest free agents: Jason Bay, Matt Holliday and John Lackey. This is not about need, because corner outfield and starting pitcher are priorities to fortify what is now a champion. But based on conversations with multiple Yankees officials, I sense that financially and philosophically the Yankees will not big-game hunt in free agency.

Of course adding Roy to your rotation would be great, but your priority needs to be in finding some bullpen help. That 'pen may have been the worst 'pen I've ever seen make it to the World Series.

Lee, Halladay, Hamels, Happ, Pedro, Moyer, Blanton would be sick.

They were saying that they might sign a diff kinda contract with Pedro were he only plays after the All-Star break to keep him fresh.

Who knows.

Lol. Yeah that's a nice rotation, but that's too many pitchers. I'd get rid of Pedro, and Moyer, and put Happ in the 'pen full-time.

But in the end, you need a better bullpen. Your not winning [expletive] next year if that bullpen is the same.

First of all, Drabek is not going to be in the rotation this season, at the start of the season at least. Earliest I could see him up here is July, more likely a September call-up and then a full time starter in 2011.

And I also see no way Halladay winds up here, just financially impossible. In the next 2-3 seasons, the Phillies will need to give big big time money to Jayson Werth, Shane Victorino, Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels, and Cliff Lee, and Jimmy Rollins is a free agent next winter. Plus Carlos Ruiz and Joe Blanton are in line for significant raises. Despite all the success, this is not the Yankees, they do not have an unlimited budget. I don't see where the money for Halladay comes from. The Phillies, as they are, are the best team in the National League (and by a decent bit too, IMO). And this is with a very thin bullpen and a bench that was very unproductive this past season. So, retooling the bench and bullpen, and possibly upgrading third base, all while keeping the farm in tact would IMO be better moves than putting all the chips in for Halladay.

I agree. Getting another quality arm or two in the 'pen and a productive bench player is what the Phils REALLY need to get back to the W.S. next year. Their lineup is on an A.L. type level already. And their starting pitching will be fine, Hamels will bounce back this season.
