Would the NBA have been better off with replacement refs?

The one nice luxury of the preseason was that despite the high volume of calls, the star treatment was lessened quite a bit. Now that the regular refs are back, they’re back to their old antics. Non-calls are a lot more rampant and obvious blocking fouls or charges are called the wrong way.

Do you prefer the star treatment?

I’m personally a big advocate for calling games fairly. And unfortunately, any NBA player will tell you that there are refs out there who have personal vendettas against certain players and coaches. I suppose that’s only natural since refs are human, too. But shouldn’t the NBA be moving to rid the game as much as possible from human error? With the technology that is currently at their disposal, they could certainly have a referee working the game who only looks at footage instead of running around with the players.

I know the NBA is a business and it is within their best interest to promote their star players. But personally, I’m a fan of the game of basketball. I like to watch guys playing their hardest while playing clean. And if a foul is committed then I believe a call is warranted. I would much rather see stars born through great play than by getting a leg up by referees. In my opinion, the replacement refs were doing a better job at calling the games fairly. Perhaps the NBA should have saved itself some cash and stuck with those guys.

No, the only thing I hate is the continuation calls that are given to stars, even Bosh gets them sometimes but LeBron everything is a [expletive]ing continuation. I agree that refs turn a blind eye to the stars, but they have to earn that treatment over their career. Star players are protected in every sport, I think they are TOLD to ref this way, this is the way the game is expected to be called, this isn't the refs fault IMO. I am sure if someone told them to 'let them play' then they would. I just hate how you can't touch a guy on the wing these days but most the time I can deal with the calls in the paint.

Haha, I saw more bad calls in the preseason than I have in the last two years in the league, combined...and even commentators pointed them out.

I'm sure as the season goes on, they would learn from their mistakes. I'm more directing this to calls favoring superstars.

I'd rather see Gilbert Arenas getting nine or more FTA per game in four of his first six games, than to see a game decided by a ball that was called out of bounds on the wrong team, or a charge that was nowhere near one.

Most every team has a star player that will get those favorable calls here and there, but there are a lot of times those superstars don't get them (Kobe, Wade and Howard have been getting hit lately, and no call has been made).
