The Phillies have agreed to terms with a "mystery reliever". Most think it is either Danys Baez or Mike MacDougal. I hope it's MacDougal, the dude has a ton of ability and I've always thought he could be amazing if paired with the right pitching coach. I have a feeling it's Baez though.

Also, Mark DeRosa is leaning towards signing with the Giants, and Justin Duchscherer is re-signing with the A's. I thought the Phillies might be interested in Duchscherer but I guess not.

For once I agree with you. I'd rather be a Philadelphia fan classified as a scum bag than a Miami fan classified as somebody who doesn't care about their teams or doesn't show up to the games.

Yeah Flash, those big stereotypes feel nice don't they?

lol that's fine, at least I can say our fans carry themselves with at least some class.

As do 90% of Philadelphia fans, which is the part you can't seem to grasp.

Anyway, this debate has gone on at least 5 times on OTR and is just flat out dumb now.

Mets sign Kelvim Escobar to minor league deal, very nice move!

Seems like wishful thinking to expect him to be a good set up man right away, I'd think. 33 years old, has been a starter the majority of his career, and has appeared in one game since 2007. Seems unlikely that he'd be able to pitch in 70-80 games.

I think he could be a potentially nice pick up, low risk high reward, but to expect him to be the regular set up man right away is what seems weird to me.

Apparently you don't know our organization to well :), We think our third baseman should become outfielders before making the move to first base. I'm hoping we don't use Kelvim for a month or two so he can be fresh for the 2nd half of the season and playoffs. I'm hoping John Maine can be an effective reliever as well.

But then again, the Phillies are bringing in Danys Baez and/or Mike MacDougal and will most likely give them important roles. Relief market is kind of thin this year and mediocre guys are getting top dollar, so I guess it calls for some creativity.

Yeah that's the only thing that makes that Granderson deal good for the Tigers. Coke is a young lefty reliever who is solid out of the pen. His value in that deal is pretty under rated.

If the Mets can just get Jason Bay and a decent starter I like our teams chances in 2010. I don't think people realize just how much a healthy Reyes does for the team.

Baez is definitely one. Like I said above, I know him personally and its been done for about a week and a half.

Well it isn't "done" yet since he has not taken his physical but yes I saw you post that. Pretty cool that you know him. I am hoping they can get MacDougal in here as well. He is the ultimate low risk high reward guy. IMO could be a very high reward.

Minaya: Mets are pursuing Matt Holliday

During an appearance at the "21 Days of Clemente" benefit in New York last week, Mets general manager Omar Minaya said the Mets are pursuing free agent outfielder Matt Holliday.

"We are pursuing Matt Holliday," said Minaya, adding that "it seems to be easier to make a deal for Jason Bay." Because the negotiations for Bay have gone so swimmingly? Originally it was assumed Bay's contract demands would be easier to swallow for the Metropolitans, but his silence -- whether it reflects his interest to play in New York or his hopes to find a five or six-year contract -- speaks volumes. With a contract for Bay in doubt, Scott Boras would love to see the Mets become a large factor in the negotiations for Holliday.

Well I guess we know now why Bay hasn't signed with the Mets. :D

Bay hasn't signed with the Mets for the same reason Holliday won't (unless they ridiculously overpay). Nobody wants to go there.

There were talks about how Bay felt uneasy about playing there. Holliday might have a different outlook though.

I wish Kenny Williams would go out and get Bay already, we desperately need a good OF. Makes me sick when I read how the Red Sox might be getting back into negotiations with him. -_-

Unless the Mets overpay, no hitter in their right mind would want to go there.

WFAN’s Mike Francesa says the Mets will announce the signing of free-agent OF Jason Bay early next week, assuming all goes well with his physical.

Francesa isn't one to lie, we St. John's attendees take our sports very seriously.

Pretty surprised he is only taking 4 years. His numbers will drop off, I think that is all but guaranteed, so this may be his final big contract. Would have thought he'd demand a lot more from the Mets. With that said, this is clearly an upgrade over the [expletive]-show the Mets were running out there last year.

Free agent Justin Duchscherer will be returning for a seventh season with the Oakland A's, officially agreeing on a one-year deal. No details of the contract were released, but it was reported last week that it is worth $5.5 million if he reaches his incentives.

Duchscherer missed the entire 2009 season after undergoing elbow surgery and treatment for clinical depression. He arrived at Spring Training recovering from 2008 hip surgery, but did not pitch in a Major League spring game before having arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow March 31.
