Deciding the school for you...

I still have a year before going through the application process for college and all that, but I'm thinking hard about the school I want to go to. I visited all the schools in the state of Tennessee that I'm interested in and UT-Knoxville is by far the one I would want to go to most. There are still plenty of schools that I want to look at that are out of state, though. I'm pretty sure I want to major in communications or journalism, and I've been sure about that for a while. I think that may help me out compared to those that still have no idea what they want to major.

When you were deciding where to go to college, what factored into your decision?

I look at money, when you have to pay for your own college you will understand. But if money is not an option go to a school that none of your friends are going too. That way you won't just hang out with them and you will meet new people.

Good topic, I myself am in the same position you are in currently. Right now I'm looking at College Park Maryland. Looking at the price/money is probably biggest thing I look at.

My dad also suggested me going to this Scholar Program at the local community college near my home, it's a 2 year program, after I graduate, I can go to almost any university I like. It saves me a ton of money.

I suggest you looking into that as well if money is an issue.

Good luck with everything. :)

The state of Tennessee have a ton of scholarship opportunities, but unfortunately, the only school in Tennessee that is above average is Tennessee-Knoxville and it's getting harder and harder to get into. University of Memphis is one of my choices too because I could probably go there for free since my parents work there, but even my parents recommended I go elsewhere.

Thanks man. Hope everything works out for you.

Me personally, I go with something close to home. I am from Miami, I don't want to go out of state because then I would be uncomfortable with my surroundings. Money is important too, college can bite you in the [expletive] later in life especially if you went to a really expensive school. It is also better if you have really good friends going to college with you so you can help each other out, not your dumbass friends, but guys who know what they are doing.

1) Make sure you know at least one or two people where you're going. You don't have to share your dorm with them, or rent an apartment with them...but just make sure they are around, just in case you need anything.

You don't want to go to a college packed with all of your best friends, because they will drag you away from studying...but you don't want to be a complete stranger, as many will feel that way for quite some time, no matter how well you get along with others.

2) If money is a problem, find a college in a medium-sized city. In the biggest cities, you'll find everything is too expensive, and you'll be driving a lot. In smaller cities, there are less jobs. Go with the middle man.

3) Make sure the college is best for your intended major. That's one of the biggest mistakes many people make: they go somewhere that really doesn't offer them what they are looking for, and they end up transferring, or sometimes just quitting.

Don't listen to your friends, though, because they want you to be where they are. Just do what is best for you, because it's not high school anymore.

Yugo is completely right on this one. Visiting the Campus is HUGE. Obviously do some research and so on and if money is an issue make sure to see scholarships they offer and/or financial aid and also look at the talk about the kind of people there(heard bad things bout some schools being discriminatory if you dont have money ect) but for me I looked at my major and the rankings. Also at what the schools had to offer and I had GT as my #1. GT said no so I went to Ohio State being my number one and was sure I wanted to go there until I visited Purdue University so yeah lol.

I checked out a lot how hard or easy it is to get into a school then looked at the money of course and the size I wanted to go to a big public school. School I'm at currently is actually the last one I applied to but I got in, visited it, liked it a lot and made a great choice.

I just looked for a place in state honestly. Price wasn't a huge concern, and I was looking for a school with a decent program for my major (business). If you have an idea of what you want to declare for your major, definitely look into the specific program for that major at the schools you apply to, and not just the overall reputation of the school.

i wanted a big school because i like having the big football team and all that. also because i like constantly meeting new people and not being forced to hang out with certain people because they are the only ones there. but there are positives and negatives with big and small schools

and if you plan on living on campus then check how many commuters and how many people go home on weekends. at rutgers most people that go here live within an hour away so a bunch of people go home. its a big school though so there are still tons of people left, but it would really suck if you were living at a school and everyone went home every weekend

and price is important too. my parents have been saving for a while, so i had the option of going almost anywhere, but i still chose rutgers because it is about half the price of anywhere else. this way if i want to go to grad school or anything like that, then i will not have to worry about the money as much as if i went to a school that cost way more. and being in debt at an expensive school doesnt sound fun

Yeah, I was more all about out of state.

I applied to a few, but I put my in state schools in my higher priority list. I got into some out of state schools like Maryland and Clemson, but decided to go to George Mason. I may transfer to an out of state school after next year though.

Yeah I know a lot of people who go to GMU, it's a good school, I'm also thinking of applying there.

It's ok, there's a lot of school spirit but the campus gets pretty boring. There isn't much to do except eat and go to the gym haha. Although the basketball season just started and the home opener was intense, so hopefully that'll make things more fun. I just wouldn't mind a change of scenery. Oh and my roommate is a smelly loner who never leaves the room so I'm looking to do a room swap haha.
