Kobe's athleticism

Recommended Posts

Dont know if Laker fans have noticed but Kobe's athleticism is nearly gone, he isnt as athletic as he was 2 years ago, when he could dunk, do tons of different acrobatic layups, he has pretty much used his pick and pop jumper (which would keep him in the league for a looooong time), anyone else notice?

Many superstars don't change their game throughout their career. I'm thankful Kobe is able to go into the post and still get 30, draw doubles and still be that dangerous player. Hate to say the name again, but it's the same thing Jordan did after the first three-peat.

Kobe's athleticism has waned over the past two years. Splitting the double used to be a staple and now it's rare for him. So far he's adjusted well with the post work, but once Gasol and Bynum are both back we'll be seeing less of Bryant inside. He'll need to go back to creating off the dribble and hitting pullup jumpers, something that's also been missing so far this year.

Now I see why he is working with Hakeem, he is learning finesse moves because he knows that he lost his athleticism, pretty weird.

It's not that weird. Like I said, most athletes are content with their game for their entire career. Some, like Bryant, work all the time. Allen Iverson has been a slasher since draft day, and he still is. The day that he completely loses that speed that I believe he still has, he'll probably retire, instead of working on his jumpers.

I could talk about how I fixed my jumper after I messed my ankle up, stopped driving to the rim so much for the fear of doing it again...but I was still pretty young. When you get 30-35 years old, playing basketball for over a decade, you start to accept things easier. You accept pain in your knees and everywhere else, among other things...and that's just how things are.

Ya that is why Kobe has a chance to be right there as one of the best ever to do it, if he already isn't lol. He will be effective till the day he retires because he has one of the best mid range games ever if not the best. And now he has this supposed post game, I haven't watched a Lakers game yet, so he is just adding new things to his arsenal that don't require outstanding athleticism. He is just working to become a completely rounded player.

His defense will obviously get worse but he is smart enough to still be a competent defender, and he might not be dropping 50's anymore when he is 36 or 37 but he will still be a 20+ point guy and still able to positively contribute to the team he is on. That is why you hope one day Bynum can develop into a consistent 20+ point type of guy because Kobe won't be able to carry this team forever.

He will be effective until he retires, would not be surprised if he played past 40, whether it be in the NBA or in Europe for huge money.

Its not gone. He's clearly pacing himself and smarter about conserving his energy. 2 points is just 2 points. There's no question he won't jump as higher as he use to but to say his athleticism is nearly gone is an oversight. Just when you think its gone, he'll bust one with of these...

Every player can pull of a dunk but its visible that his athleticism is nearly gone, the guy cant drive in as good as he used to

I cant believe this is even a thread. You guys do realize Kobe always paces himself to start the season. Meaning he doesnt drive in and throw it down every play, he plays from the post taking fade aways and jumpers with the occasional layup so he does not injure himself and when the playoffs comes he always turns it on and goes right at the basket. Maybe thats why Kobe won the title and Lebron didnt.
