Lakers Total Salary Bill Jumps From $86M To $112.7M

The Lakers have a player payroll of $91.3 million this season and will spend an additional $21.4 million in luxury taxes if their roster remains the same on the final day of the regular season.

Their total salary bill would be $112.7 million if they make no trades or minor free-agent acquisitions. Comparatively, they spent about $86 million last season, including luxury taxes.

That figure does not include Phil Jackson's $12-million salary to coach the team.

"As long as we keep winning, I think he'll keep doing it," center Andrew Bynum said.

Hey, it's all well and good if you end up winning the ring. Kudos to Lakers ownership for opening the bank in order to win.

They don't really get much relief in the near future either. They almost certainly won't pick up Adam Morrison's option, and they won't resign Derek Fisher for more than $5 million max. Mbenga and Powell would probably not be resigned either, and if the Lakers pick up Jordan Farmar's qualifying offer, I doubt they also resign Shannon Brown.

Even with that said, they're looking at an $87 million payroll next season.

Shannon Brown is coming back.

Farmar, Fish, AMMO will be gone.

Fish may return though, but only for vet's min.

DJ and JP will either get min contracts or we look elsewhere. I'm guessing one stays and one leaves, not a big deal. Jerry Buss spends to keep a winner, so as long as we keep winning and contending, everything will be fine.

Best owner in the league, period.

Yeah, Brown will be back. I don't see us letting him go.

We tried to deal Farmar to Houston last year, and he's still not playing the way we need him to, so he's walking if we can't find a suitor.

If we keep Powell or Mbenga, it'll be whoever accepts the least amount of money. I'd say DJ will. Powell has been good, but he doesn't play defense, and he can get more money elsewhere.

Fisher will retire a Laker, not only for his sake, but for his family's sake...and probably in the best interest of Phil Jackson.

Morrison has no future with the team. He'll be dealt or let go, and that's not even something to talk about.

Of course, those guys will stay if they take less money, but that's not going to happen with Farmar.

With the Lakers payroll, they'll need to find guys who will play for cheap. Farmar's option will be for less than 3 million, while Brown will probably opt out and look for more playing time and money. Fisher will resign (or retire), and Morrison's gone. The Lakers would still be miles over the cap. If Brown is looking for a $4.5-5 million a year deal (not unreasonable), would the Lakers sign him, considering how expensive the team is everhwere else? They let Ariza go, even though he fit in great with the Lakers. Brown might be another victim of economics.

They'll give Brown his money because he'll be our starter soon. Farmar won't ever start for us. He's the anti-triangle point guard. He belongs in a run and gun system.

If we don't re-sign Brown, that means we plan to start Fisher until he retires, or we plan on bringing in someone like Hinrich...and we can't afford that.

In regards to us letting Ariza go, we didn't...it was his agent that decided that. We went after Artest because we already knew Ariza was looking into Cleveland, and once the deal was said to be on the table for Ron, Ariza's agent turned his attention to Houston.

There's no way Shannon Brown gets an offer that high. He'll get 3, 4 million max, and even then, if he continues to play the way he has, Jerry Buss will have no problem showing him the money. No team is going to be throwing near MLE money for Shannon Brown. As much as I like him, he hasn't really proven anything yet, and has basically bounced around the league his entire career. I'm not worried about Shannon leaving, he loves LA, and LA loves him. He already turned down a higher offer this summer from the Pacers to resign for less with us, so there's the proof. If it takes near MLE to sign him, then we might as well just use the entire MLE to sign a proven starting PG.

The way I see it, Farmar is basically gone, he has no future with this squad. Fish will be back one year max around vet min money, which is a substantial discount from his 5 million this year. AMMO's huge deal will be gone, we have some flexibility to work with.

And as Brandon already said, we didn't let Ariza go. He left on his own terms, and we replaced him with a better player. If someone overpays for Shannon, we can just let him walk and find a better PG elsewhere for MLE money.
