Breaking news: Allen Iverson retires

I too believe there's a slight chance he comes out of retirement. I just cannot see Allen retiring for good, he still has a lot of basketball left in the tank, and I know he's hungry to win a title.

But I honestly do not see how his Hall of Fame status is up in the air, I think he's a sure hall of famer and one of the greatest guards to ever play the game.

He can't be THAT hungry lol. Otherwise he would have made it clear that he'd be willing to come off the bench, which he isnt.

He is a HOF'er though, its just unfortunate the way all this went down.

This is what I posted on another forum after I heard the announcement..

"He grew up in the "me first" style of basketball that sprung out of the Michael Jordan era, which in turn perhaps was a response to the "team first" style of basketball during the previous Magic/Bird "era".

For all his faults he was a exciting player whether you like that that style of basketball or not. For such a small frame in both height & build he was fearless & put his body in harm's way for many years. He dragged a defensive oriented team that lacked talent into the Finals and one can argue he was the poster boy (for good or bad) for the emergence of the "hip hop" flavour in to the NBA (and vice-versa).

As a Raptors fan despite the results his (76ers) and Vinces (Raptors) Playoff battle still to this day is one of my favourite playoff series to have watched. Star players on Star Stages playing like Stars"

But it looks like he's coming back.

Iverson Believed To Be Reconsidering Comeback

Immediately after word came out that Allen Iverson had announced he was retiring, sources close to him told Stephen A. Smith he was having a change of heart.

"I think he just wants to feel wanted again," one of Iverson's confidants told me Wednesday night.

The problem with Iverson is that he is the most selfish player ever. He wants to win but he doesn't want the sacrifice that comes with that.

I have a saying I live by.... You can do anything you want but you can't do anything you want.

Iverson has always resisted being coached and any type of uniform behavior. If he wasn't a rich basketball player he'd be a bum because nobody would employ him due to his selfish attitude.

I think the league has black-balled him. The stuff that he has pulled in his career has caught up to him along with the way he quit on the Pistons.

Iverson has superb career numbers but the problem is that he has never gotten those numbers in a efficient manner along with winning. Iverson is a cancer should never have the opportunity to compete for a championship.

I agree with the previous poster who said that Iverson isn't a Hall of Famer. There is more to the HOF than numbers simply because there is a panel of humans who vote and deliberate on who is inducted. If HOF induction was computerized like the BCS then yes, Iverson would be a lock. I think you see Iverson get the Pete Rose treatment.

Lastly, someone in this thread said that championships weigh to heavily into HOF induction. Coming from a perspective of a winning and championship history I can say that it should matter even more. Fans of franchises and players who have never won a championship can't relate to this. I'm not saying that a player like Steve Kerr should be a HOF'er over a guy like Reggie Miller but I can say that Kerr has hit just as many is not more meaningful playoff shots than Reggie.

You can't keep a top 5 PPG player of all time out of the hall, an MVP as well. People honestly hold titles WAYYY to high in regard if that is what this is all about. If it is about his attitude I don't see how his personality is relevant in basketball ability and accomplishments. Any way you slice it he should be a first ballot HOFer.

Anyways, I'll believe it when I see the press conference. He is still capable of contributing to a team, and if he IS retiring he is doing so way too early, not only in his career but in the season as well.
