The Oklahoman recently conducted a poll among players and coaches to determine who has the highest basketball IQ in the NBA.

The results were as follows:

1. Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles

2. Jason Kidd, Dallas

3. Steve Nash, Phoenix

4. Chris Paul, New Orleans

5. LeBron James, Cleveland

Also receiving votes were Carmelo Anthony, Deron Williams and Dwyane Wade.

LeBron over Duncan? For basketball IQ? This is sad.

Yeah, I get where they think passing the ball takes a ton of IQ, but Duncan's defensive IQ is far greater than LeBron's, and I would go on to say that his offensive IQ is just as good, if not better.

This is actually a good discussion about everyone in the league and not just Lakers. But ya, the list takes a credibility hit without Duncan even mentioned. Like KD said on Yahoo, maybe it's for the fact that he doesn't have to make as many decisions as those who dominate the ball. But he should definitely be up there. I guess the mindset for Lebron is that he doesn't make any wrong decisions. I mean i'd argue that he's the most efficient at dominating the ball.

How is basketball IQ even measured?

I would measure it by measuring if a player understands game situations, teammates' strengths and weaknesses, how to attack opponents, if a player can anticipate, if a player knows where open shots are on offense, and on defense, where potential open players could be and how to shut them down. If a player knows when to go to his counters, if a player knows not to force things, etc.

I think most of these players (except really Anthony) are high IQ players, but it also shows that the GM's and front office types are just as skewed towards stars as fans are. How is Andre Miller not on this list? Or Joel Pryzbilla, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Brian Scalbrine, and Derek Fisher. Why isn't Brandon Roy up there, and of course Duncan. No Lindsay Hunter, no Shane Battier, no Pau Gasol? No Grant Hill? No Chuck Hayes? No Kevin Ollie? No Kurt Thomas?

It's as if they just took the best backcourt or wing playmakers and called it a day, which isn't what the question asked.
