Roy Halladay, the All-Star pitcher who has been the subject of much trade talk since before last July's deadline, will not approve any proposed deal after he reports to spring training, according to his representatives.

This means that the Toronto Blue Jays either will have to work out a trade of the right-hander by the end of the offseason, or be prepared to receive only draft-pick compensation when the pitcher becomes eligible for free agency in the fall of 2010.

So he wants to pitch on a contender, and yet he won't accept a deadline deal to get into the thick of a playoff race?

Well, it's pretty clear that all the trade speculation in the middle of last season really affected his game. So I don't blame him. If I were in his spot I'd want to be traded by February too, so I'd have all of Spring Training to get settled in and pitch with a clear head all year, then deal with free agency next winter even if it means risking not getting dealt and one more year of pitching for Toronto and no playoffs.
