Interesting story from the world of Ron Artest today, huh? The one where he came out and admitted that, as a member of the Chicago Bulls from 1999-2002, he used to down Hennessy -- a brand of cognac, for the uninitiated -- at halftimes of actual NBA games?

That's pretty incredible stuff, even for Artest. If you believe it, that is.

I do believe it, but only to a certain extent. I believe he may have done it once, or maybe even twice -- but not that it was something he was doing on a regular basis.

Locker rooms aren't as big as you might think, and over time, that would be a pretty tough thing to conceal from your coaches and teammates. And somebody -- a teammate, an opponent that smelled it on his breath, or hell, even the guy at the liquor store near the arena that supposedly sold it to him -- would have let that little cat out of the bag by now if it was the truth.

I also tend to agree with Ramona Shelburne of the L.A. Daily News, whotweeted the following about the situation:

My thoughts on Ron's halftime Hennessy habit: Usually when someone says a story is wrong, they blame the reporter. In this case, blame Ron.

I wouldn't say Ron is a liar. Not at all. But he does embellish stories, as all good storytellers do.

Not saying story is false, but whenever I hear Ron say something like that, I wonder if he's embellished at all.

Same here -- and this certainly seems like an embellishment.

The exact quote that was released from a bigger story in the yet-to-be-seen December 7th issue of The Sporting News reads like this:

"I used to drink Hennessy ... at halftime," Artest says in the interview, which hits newsstands this week. "I (kept it) in my locker. I'd just walk to the liquor store (near the stadium) and get it."
