Report: Mariners in lead for Chone Figgins

Multiple sources told FOXSports.com that the Mariners are the clear frontrunners to sign free agent Chone Figgins.

That certainly wouldn't help in the power department, an area in which the Mariners are clearly lacking. Figgins, though, would be an excellent No. 2 hitter behind Ichiro Suzuki and a fine defender at third base. He's likely to get a four-year deal worth $10 million-$12 million per season. Report: M's, Figgins close to 4-yr, $35M deal

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Mariners are close to signing Chone Figgins to a four-year, $35 million contract. That's $1 million less than the amount originally reported by FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal. It's a pretty nice bargain for the Mariners, who just landed one of the most highly coveted position players on the free agent market. Figgins, 31, will bring excellent defense to Seattle along with a knack for getting on base. He hit .298/.395/.393 this past season with five homers, 54 RBI, 42 stolen bases and 114 runs scored in 615 at-bats. Dec. 4 - 4:02 pm et

Noo dont take our Figgy :(

But really I dont think we should have re signed him anyways. We have to commit our money elsewehere, we have enough contact hitters capable of being a solid leadoff hitter. And we have Brandon Wood a power hitting 3rd basemen ready to terrorize the league, remember when Teix left Morales stepped in with MVP numbers, look for the same here. I like Figgy and hes a good player. The Mariners will probably enjoy him, this should hopefully force them to bat Ichiro 3rd since he doesnt walk alot and can drive in runs. Although I have to warn you about Figgins, hes a streaky, sometimes inconsistent, and injury prone player. Hes had stretches where he can hit any pitch anywhere, and then cant hit the side of a barn. Hes also gotten hurt quite a few times. Also if the M's do make the playoffs, expect Figgins to perform like a minor leaguer. His postseason numbers are horrific, and hes annually the reason we lose in the post season every year.

Figgins is very very good, but I think there are some way better bargains out there. Main reason I am happy the Phillies pursued Placido Polanco instead of him.

eh for 3 million extra a year I'd take Figgins over Polonco

Given the Phillies situation, I will take Polanco for 3/$18 mil over Figgins for 4/$36 mil any day of the week. In the Phillies case (they are almost at their budget and still have pieces to add and current guys to eventually extend), that $3 mil is going to go a long way.

Still think there are other good bargains as well.

The offer means Beltre must now choose by Monday whether to accept the arbitration process and work out a one-year deal with the club or opt for free agency elsewhere.

He will hit free agency. It is very rare for these guys to accept arbitration, most of the time the team only offers it so they can get draft pick compensation when the player eventually leaves. Even less likely for Beltre now that it looks like Figgins is on board. Unless Scott Boras sees a much better market for third basemen next winter, I don't really see him sticking around.
