Big Chief Triangle
I really don't understand the hype with these commercials. Lebron isn't even a peer of Kobe's and has not accomplished half of what Kobe has. Lebron is nowhere near any type of threat to the Lakers or Kobe's next ring I just don't see the correlation or rivalry that Nike or the media is trying to start. To me this is just a way to involve Lebron in some type of marketing but unfortunately Lebron hasn't done anything to deserve to be viewed as Kobe's rival. Some players that I feel would be more appropriate would be Duncan then Garnett. These are the only two that even come close to being viewed as a rival or peer. Personally I think Nike should do a commercial with two Kobe's playing against each other making each other better. Everyone knows who TD AND KG are with. I'm just saying for the sake of the commercials to make sense. Not speaking from a marketing aspect at all. Not at all. I'm speaking from an aspect that truly reflects the state of the game. Lebron isn't a rival of Kobe so he shouldn't be marketed like one. I just think it looks forced especially when Kobe is shining rings and Bron is looking for shoes or eating cookies. One of the main things I notice is that the Kobe puppet doesn't reflect Kobe's true persona at all. The more that I think about it I think if Nike was dead set on having a rival for Kobe it should be Melo. Melo has played Kobe tough in the playoffs and they have a great relationship. Melo is a little more focused and driven than what Bron is so the commercials would come off as more of a pending war than a Sesame Street rip-off

Celtics3420
They're showing the rivalry between the two best players in the league right now. What they accomplished so far doesn't come into factor here lol. Obviously it's for money making purposes, and it's not only for LBJ to get some media attention(like he needs more of it lol), it's for kobe too. JWaLL
It's called marketing. Even the most casual fans know Lebron and Kobe are the 2 best players in the league. If a company has the opportunity to advertise their merchandise in commercials with Lebron AND Kobe, why would they pass that up? They aren't necessarily treating them as "rivals." The puppet ones? To me it seems like they are trying to show them off as friends, not competitors. Not saying you're wrong, I'm just not sure which one you're referring to. The commercials were initially billed as the build up to the Finals. They didn't change to the friendship angle until Dwight confiscated Lebron's dancing shoes. The relationship between LBJ+KB24 in the commercials is about them being friends and competitors at the same time. This is the image that Nike is trying to send. Be nice to each other, but compete to the fullest. Which holds true to many relationships in professional and college sports. I agree with OP about LBJ not even being close to a true rivalry to KB24. But it really is Nike simply attempting to create something that is not there and also an attempt to recreate the Bird - Magic - Jordan rivalries of the 80s and early 90s. Problem is all three of those players were entirely proven and they were entirely proven year after year, unlike LBJ who has made one final in six years and continuously fails at being a true leader. JWaLL
Only the most stubborn Laker fans would take "offense" to these commercials... "OMG commercials making Kobe and Lebron equals!?!?! Helllllll no." I mean come on, I'm sure the majority of Laker fans on the board don't consider them a bad ad campaign, so just ctfd.
Big Chief Triangle
It's a big deal because the commercials are not accurate. They are not amusing at all and so far from the truth that something has to be said. Kobe is the GOAT and should be treated accordingly. I don't recall seeing Michael Jordan doing commercials with Hersey Hawkins or Vinny Johnson. It's all about accuracy and reflecting the game the way it truly is. Bron isn't a peer of Kobe. So he shouldn't be in a commercial with Kobe in a fashion that depicts them as rivals or even peers. Like I said, TD or KG would be appropriate but they are with a different company. Melo would work but he doesn't sing or dance like Bron so I guess he isn't as marketable. Being a Laker fan puts me in a different perspective. To myself everything matters. That's the mindset of a champion. I'm pretty sure that Celtic fans wouldn't appreciate seeing KG doing commercials with Zach Randolph. I'm pretty sure Spur fans don't wanna see TD in a commercial with Anthony Randolph. There is just a way you do things and a way to not do them. I get that's it about money and marketing but it doesn't make it right. The classic Nike commercials with Jordan/Bird/Magic would look a lot different if they were Jordan/Isiah Rider/Glenn Robinson. You share my view and you may not. That's fine. Either discuss it or don't comment. Edited December 22, 2009 by Big Chief Triangle
Check my Stats
LeBron is closer to the level of Kobe now then either KG or Duncan are, easily in fact. If you don't like that Kobe and LeBron are on just about the same level then you should close your eyes during commercials during Laker or Cavalier games. LeBron is the only guy who can be mentioned with Kobe because he is the only player who dominates the same way Kobe does. If this bothers you now, I wonder what you will feel like when people hold LBJ above Kobe in 3-4 years.

Owner Real Deal Posted December 22, 2009 Owner Report Share Posted December 22, 2009 Kobe to LeBron is a much, much, much different comparison than that of Garnett and Randolph. In 3-4 years, LeBron James will more than likely be the "undisputed" best player in the league. Nike is marketing the two best players because Bryant will be handing the torch to James. I know a great deal of Lakers fans don't care much for LeBron, but there isn't a single person here that can deny his talent. His attitude is in the gutter, but that can't take away from his physical abilities on the court. Personally, the only other player I'd want Kobe to share a commercial with would be Wade, but I absolutely love pairing Kobe and LeBron together. They were the two everyone focused on in the MVP race over the last two years, the two players everyone watched closely in the Olympics, and it's probably the match-up that gathers the most attention (media and fans) when it happens in the regular season. If Kobe and LeBron is a bad thing, Jordan and Magic were, because Magic sure the hell wasn't the player Michael was. He wasn't the defender, he wasn't the scorer, wasn't as clutch, and if putting the two best players in the NBA in a commercial together is a problem, sticking Magic and Bird in there with Jordan was idiotic. He does not win titles, he is not proven as a player or leader, he has not figured out that he needs to make sacrifices in order to win. LBJ has tons of development to do before he can even start to be truly compared to Kobe because for LBJ it is not about the statistical side of the game, its about the mental side. In 3-4 years, LeBron James will more than likely be the "undisputed" best player in the league. I personally think Kevin Durant will win a title before LBJ.
