McGrady just might interest Bulls again

One of the regrettable chapters in recent Bulls history was the failed free-agent pursuit of 2000.

The No. 1 target was Toronto's Tracy McGrady, who was met at O'Hare Airport by mascots, Luv-a-Bulls and a three-piece band playing "Sweet Home Chicago."

It was all for naught as McGrady chose Orlando. Nearly 10 years later, the Bulls may get another chance.

McGrady recently left the Houston Rockets and both sides reportedly will seek a trade. Sources suggested the Bulls are open to acquiring McGrady, who is just 30 years old.

The 6-foot-8 swingman is the NBA's highest-paid player at $23.2 million, but his contract ends after the season. A trade with the Bulls would almost have to include the expiring contracts of Brad Miller and Jerome James.

The Bulls might also be interested in moving John Salmons to guarantee a larger amount of cap space next summer. He's owed $6.5 million next season but has an option to terminate the deal and become a free agent.

Without Salmons on the payroll, the Bulls could have more than $20 million to spend on the 2010 free-agent class.

McGrady had microfracture knee surgery in February. He returned to play briefly in six games for the Rockets, then complained about wanting a larger role and left the team.

Last season he averaged 15.6 points in 35 games. Before that he averaged at least 21 points for eight straight years.

"Whoever gets me is going to get a hungry player," McGrady said recently in the Houston Chronicle. "I don't care if I go to the moon. It doesn't matter."

I wish the Raptors could trade for him. I think he can still be a contributor as long as he doesn't expect to be the top guy anymore, and his stats most likely won't be great anymore. He is still talented as hell, even if he is a step slower now. People forget he is 12 years pro already, so he isn't 'only' 30, he is an old 30, a lot of mileage on those legs.

I am curios for what the Rockets are looking for, they were offered Arenas I heard and they decline. So I guess they don't want to take on any longer contracts. Don't know what they expect to get for a 30 year old on the decline who is the highest paid player and also expiring, lol.

I just hope he doesn't end up in Boston, New York, or LAL. Any other team would be fine (well, I'd hate to see him suit up for the Nuggets or the Jazz because they're division rivals). I would actually like to see him in Chicago. That'd be pretty cool.

Who will we have to give up to get him though? I know Salmons is 90% going to be in it if a deal happens. Who else?

Houston Receives;

John Salmons(he can opt out), Brad Miller(expiring deal), and Jerome James(expiring deal).

Chicago Receives:

Tracy McGrady(expiring deal).

I don't want him in Chicago, his knee is messed up and he's injury prone, all he's going to do is take up space even though I think he's expiring.

For him we lose a good player in Salmons who is not injury prone and that is younger and better, Brad is pretty mediocre as well, I don't want McGrady though.

You guys do realize that Houston's roster is full right? 3 for 1 won't work.

They can always release somebody if the deal is right. :glasses: If they get James they can just release him and they can release Mike Harris too.

Rockets won't cut Mike Harris, they've had their eyes on him for far too long to just let him go like that. We would need to move 2 players, Harris and someone else like Joey Dorsey (Cook isn't moving). Unless Morey feels Dorsey will become a decent NBA player, I don't think he would mind parting with him. That is it though, other than those two players, no other Rocket will be moved in this deal.

Personally, I don't like this deal one bit. We have a growing version of Brad Miller in David Andersen, James is as useless as Cook, and Salmons has been awful this year and I rather play Budinger/Taylor than him.
