The deadline is approaching for the Heat to guarantee the contract of guard Carlos Arroyo for the remainder of the season.

Arroyo says that he has received no assurances from the club.

"I try not to worry about those concerns," said Arroyo. "I just go out and do what I can do to try to stay on this team. Just play hard and hopefully things will fall in place. I definitely want to stay here."

Because the Heat are above the NBA luxury tax, Arroyo's contract would count about $1 million toward a season-ending tax bill that sits at $3 million.

Well, two more days... Is he a keeper?

I'd say so. He's been playing way better than Chalmers, who has done no such thing to regain his starting position back, that's for sure. Or else, alternatively, the Heat could move Wade over to the point and start Wright at the 2, or vise versa..

There's a chance the Heat may get rid of him. The Heat aren't short on point guards. Aside from Mario there's Chris Quinn, who isn't as bad as some people seem to think (and Pat Riley seems to like him a lot for some reason), and both Dwyane Wade and Dorell Wright can fill in at the point if needed.

Still, Arroyo has played very well. I like the way he sets the tempo for the starting line up, and Spoelstra seems to like his presence on the floor. Thing is, Pat Riley envisions Chalmers as a guy who can put up a solid 36 mpg, and as I said, he likes Chris Quinn. Quinny can bring more 3 point shooting that this team desperately needs.

Arroyo has been solid this year, but he isn't someone the Heat really need, nor would he be in their future plans after this year. The fact that he's been a part of the starting line up recently may give him hope to remain on this team.. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Rafer Alston, one of the players at the heart of the Miami Heat's playoff revival in 2003-04, said Tuesday he is planning on a South Florida encore.

Alston, who had been moved out of the New Jersey Nets' rotation, completed a buyout Tuesday with the Nets, and plans to sign Thursday with the Heat.

"I'm coming," he said Tuesday night. "I can't explain in words how excited I am. I'm really excited."

Alston, however, confirmed that unless a team claims him during the 48-hour waiver period, and therefore agrees to pay him his full $5.3 million salary for the season, he will sign Thursday with the Heat. He will receive almost all of his salary in the buyout from the Nets.

"I don't know how it works," he said. "I know I have to clear waivers. If that happens, I definitely want to get back on the floor as soon as possible."

The Heat plays Wednesday night at home against the Boston Celtics, then begins a six-game Western Conference trip on Friday night against the Phoenix Suns. Alston said he would like to be in uniform for the Heat against the Suns, accepting any role that is offered.

"I'll come off the bench and help out, helping out Arroyo and (Mario) Chalmers," he said. "And whatever happens after that, I'll be ready for."

Arroyo knows that his fate hangs in the balance.

"I know I was given a unique opportunity and wanted to take full advantage of it, do my best and everything would fall into place," he said of agreeing to a non-guaranteed contract despite his veteran experience. "I knew I'd have to bust my butt for everything.''

Coach Erik Spoelstra voiced his support Tuesday of Arroyo.

"I like Carlos. His teammates like him. It's hard not to. He's a veteran, who's been through a lot of wars,'' Spoelstra said. "He's had every kind of role. He's been through adversity. He's been the third point guard, the backup point guard and he's been a starting point guard. That's unique and it's also a specific role we need for this team."

So, by the sound of it, the Heat will be signing Alston AND extending Arroyo. This is interesting, cause neither of the three have a guaranteed starting role. There will be a big battle in practice for minutes, that's for sure.
