Phightins
Joe Blanton pitched very well. Only gave up 2 hard hit balls if my memory serves me correct. This makes me happy. However, I am frightened that JC Romero is the only lefty in this bullpen.
Phightins
Also, this was weird. Mike Sweeney has a similar body-type to Pat Burrell, has the same number, and uses the same intro music (Holy Diver). I was VERY confused. Phightins
I am not going to lie, that might be one of the three or four best games I have ever seen Cole Hamels pitch. Yet another example of why a starting pitcher's W-L is so irrelevant!
Phightins
Also, I have no idea why Charlie Manuel decided to have Placido Polanco bunt in the 8th inning. For my money, Polly is the best hitter in the lineup right now. If there is anybody I want swinging away with men on base in a 1 run deficit, it is him. That was the turning point of the game. Phightins
It is very concerning to me that the three of the four highest paid pitchers in the Phillies bullpen (Brad Lidge, JC Romero, and Danys Baez) are perhaps the 3 least reliable. Honestly I have seen a bit of improvement in Lidge over the past 2 weeks or so, but Baez is awful and Romero is a mess. I have never seen a pitcher responsible for pitching in one of the more crucial points of the game (the 7th/8th/9th) have as horrendous of a K/BB ratio as JC Romero (18 strikeouts/23 walks). That just won't work in the late innings, much less any part of the bullpen, much less any part of a Major League pitching staff period. And this dude has been the only lefty in the bullpen for the majority of the season. This frightens me coming down the stretch here. At this point, Ryan Madson and Chad Durbin are really the only two relievers I have a significant amount of trust in. Jose Contreras also, to a degree. although he is rather inconsistent. Phightins
Cool. Ross Gload starts hitting, and then he pulls his groin. I guess this means Dom Brown probably sticks around when Victorino comes back now.
Phightins
The guy who is supposed to be the 8-hole hitter in the healthy version of the lineup (Carlos Ruiz) has an .816 OPS. The 8-hole hitter.... I can't wait to see what happens when Utley and Howard get back. Hopefully nobody else goes down in the meanwhile.... Phightins
Hell yeah! Anyway, as I told Kyle, last night I was at the game with a friend of mine (and his parents) who also has season tickets (I had tickets for last night also, but couldn't find anybody to go with, so I just went along with my buddy because he had an extra ticket. And his seats are way better than mine). They have season tickets for the Flyers and Sixers also, but for some reason they leave basically every game early to beat traffic (FYI, this is easily in my top 5 most hated things in the whole wide world-- leaving a game early that is). Anyway, since they were gracious enough to take me and drive me to the stadium, of course I went along with them when they decided to leave last night in the sixth inning.... Blah. Never again. Phightins
Also, after watching Papelbon and Broxton yesterday, I do not feel quite as bad about Lidge. Quite.
Phightins
Un[expletive]ingbelievable. This team's inability to score for Cole Hamels is absolutely absurd.
Phightins
Cole Hamels is as dominant as he as ever been. Frustrating as hell that he is always up against really good pitchers and the Phillies can't score for [expletive] on days that he pitches, but again, W-L for a pitcher is meaningless. Phightins
Good news! Chase Utley is way ahead of schedule. Playing in a single-A game tomorrow night, likely to be back later in the week.
Phightins
Cole Hamels' last 2 starts...15 IP, 2 ER, 19 SO, 2 BB (one intentional). And he is 0-2. W-L is almost entirely meaningless. In fact, Cole Hamels has not had a win since July 11th. But in the games since then (6 starts)... 42 IP, 10 ER (2.14 ERA), 50 SO, 9 BB, 0.97 WHIP. Run support FTL. Phightins
He could have pitched tomorrow against Misch and the Phillies offense would still find a way to get shut out.

Phightins
The band is almost completely back together and they are on their typical August roll. Fun times. Also, I had some pretty rad seats last night. http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/philsphan1210/mail.jpg http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/philsphan1210/mail-4.jpg http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g96/philsphan1210/mail-1.jpg Edited August 18, 2010 by Phightins

Phightins
Of the three players we got back from Seattle for Cliff Lee, two of them have been getting rocked in A/AA, and the third was arrested on coke charges this morning. I think the verdict is officially in on this one.
