USC's Carroll to the Seahawks?

I believe what makes this different from past NFL job offers is that Carroll would get to have control over staffing and personnel decisions. This article from ESPN.com covers the reasons why he'd be interested in a return to the NFL pretty well:

If going back to the NFL means that much to him, he should do it. He's accomplished a lot in a decade with USC, and it seems like he's ready for a new challenge. In Seattle he's got an opportunity to shape the organization the way he sees fit, starting with two first round draft choices. It's not a great job, but compared to Detroit, Cleveland, and Oakland, he could do worse.

If things don't work out, I see him coming back to college football and building a team up to a championship contender, much like Nick Saban did with Alabama.

Seahawks close to $35M deal with Pete Carroll

The L.A. Times reports that the Seahawks are closing in on a five-year, $35 million agreement with Pete Carroll that will make him both the team's head coach and club president.

No deal has been signed and Seahawks beat writer Danny O'Neil insists that nothing is official, but the sides are clearly serious. If a deal was already consummated, the Seahawks would've violated the Rooney Rule (hence Leslie Frazier's interview on Saturday). Carroll has a number of reasons for leaving USC, not the least of which is his disdain for the BCS system.

Pete Carroll, who led USC to seven Pacific 10 Conference titles and two national championships, will resign his position at the university and accept the coaching job with the Seattle Seahawks.

Trojans players and coaches learned of the news via text message from an assistant coach, The Times' Gary Klein has learned.

Seahawks chief executive officer Tod Leiweke was in town on Sunday to finalize the deal. Carroll will take over as coach while the organization begins its search for a new general manager.

Carroll amassed a record of 97-19 in nine seasons at USC. The Trojans won national titles in 2003 (Associated Press) and 2004 (Bowl Championship Series). They finished 9-4 this season and won the Emerald Bowl, their first appearance in a non-BCS bowl in eight years.

Report: Jeremy Bates joins Carroll in Seattle

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports that USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates will "definitely" run the Seahawks' offense under Pete Carroll.

This is quite a blow to the Bears' plans. Chicago GM Jerry Angelo had set up an interview with Bates for Monday, but it appears the meeting won't happen. Bates' history as a tutor of young quarterbacks should make Carroll confident if he chooses to use one of his two first-round picks on a passer. Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen are both likely to intrigue the Seahawks.

Carroll bringing USC offensive coordinator to Seahawks

It's looking pretty clear that Pete Carroll will take over as coach of the Seattle Seahawks as early as today, according to the Seattle Times. He resigned from his job as USC's head coach, laying the groundwork for today's probable announcement.

ESPN is reporting that Carroll isn't the only fella that USC will be losing from its football program. The word is that Carroll will be bringing along USC offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates to the Seahawks. Bates was supposed to meet with Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo today but that meeting apparently isn't going to happen because Bates would like to remain paired up with Carroll.

The Seahawks have two first-round picks in the upcoming draft and, with Carroll and Bates involved, it is thought that both could be used on quarterbacks (Sam Bradford? Jimmy Clausen?).

Now let's see if Carroll can avoid getting himself fired from the Seahawks as he did from the New York Jets and New England Patriots back in the '90s.
