Lakers after Bosh...with Bynum?

Don't really believe it...but wow.

As promised, today’s column is pure basketball, triggered by trade winds.

A Lakers source told me the team had its sights set high, as usual, and planned to target the possible acquisition of Chris Bosh when it got closer to the 3 p.m. Feb. 18 trade deadline, and the Raptors might be more likely to move their Olympian/All-Star while still entitled to compensation.

It commonly is believed Bosh almost certain is to flee Toronto after this season, when he has the right to opt out of the final year ($17.1 million) of his contract.

My source believes the Lakers will offer Andrew Bynum for Bosh (if they haven’t done so already) well before the deadline expires. In itself, the one-for-one swap is impossible to make. Bynum’s “base year” essentially allows L.A. to take back but half of his salary this year ($12.5M). Of course, that restriction is lifted when next year’s salary ($13.7M) activates come July 1, at which time a sign-and-trade transaction would be feasible.

Please God...

That'd be a tough trade to execute with Bynum's base year salary. I can see the Raptors doing this since Bosh is being shopped heavily.

No he isn't. Just because other teams are inquiring and expressing interest doesn't mean that they are shopping him.

And journalists like Peter Vescay are terrible. I am just as credibile are he is. If this clown told me that the sky was blue, I would question it.

That being said, this is definitely the best "rumor" that I have heard for Bosh. It is 10X better than that garbage Chicago "rumor" I heard earlier with Hinrich, Thomas and a pick going to Toronto.

The Raptors would probably do this deal, but I don't see the Lakers doing this deal. When was the last time the Lakers made a trade or signed a player and it was in the media before the deal was done?

Gasol - No one in the media talked about the deal.

Ariza - Same with Gasol.

The Lakers are always so quiet about moves.

I know this deal is fake because Jim Buss is not trading his franchise player for anyone not named Dwight or LeBron.

Bynum, Fisher and Odom for Bosh, Calderon

Jim Buss is not trading his own draft pick.

Phil is not going to be ok with trading Fisher.

Odom is pretty much the whole bench.

Word is Jackson is behind this rumor. He's loved Bosh for a long time and Chris in the triangle opens the floor for Kobe and Pau and shreds Boston's defensive schemes. No one could collapse on Kobe if Bosh is unguarded at the elbow. Makes a ton of sense offensively. Defensively I'm not sold and get worried about toughness, but solving the Boston D is a big step.

That said I doubt this happens, at least not now. Colangelo may be listening to offers but he strikes me as the type to cling to Bosh literally to the very last second and then prays Chris will want an S&T to the team of his choice in the summer. Which could be why Jackson floated this, he wants to plant the seed in Bosh's mind that LA is a viable option. Also has the benefit of potentially lighting a fire under Bynum, who now knows he better bring it defensively or he could be have snow on his shoulders instead of playmates. Welcome to the league kid.

BYC is not an issue, the Lakers can add Ammo, Farmar and Powell, the Raps add a throw-in for BYC balance and a deal could be made. I think the only holdup would be Colangelo. Jackson would push the good doctor to do it, and a trade now would lessen this year's tax hit. Colangelo won't do this imo unless they start a losing streak or Bosh goes to him privately and requests that the deal be made.

A larger deal to include Calderon won't happen, Buss won't touch that salary. No way the Raps would give up Jack, so I don't see how LA gets a 1 out of this. They'd have to get a point by other means, won't happen with Toronto.

Even if nothing happens this has benefits for LA. Bosh was just focused on going where LeBron signs, now he considers the Lakers as well. Meanwhile Bynum is either slapped out of complacency or sulks and seals his fate. Sink or swim for Andrew.

Man, EVERYONE is all over this rumor now.

Bill Simmons on Twitter:

FYI: Bosh & Banks (exp 2011) for Bynum, Vujacic (exp 2011) and Morrison's expiring works under the cap. I am terrified.

Ken Berger of CBS Sports (who broke the Ron Artest signing first with his own sources):

..and sources believe there could be legs to a scenario that would send Bosh to the Lakers for Andrew Bynum. Bynum’s base-year compensation status complicates matters slightly, but sources believe a workable deal could be consummated.

Chad Ford of ESPN:

As word spread over the weekend that, before the Feb. 18 trade deadline, there will be some serious interest in Chris Bosh from the Rockets and Lakers (among others), the reaction around the league was swift.

If the Raptors were to trade Bosh to a contender in February, a team with which he might want to stay, it could dramatically alter the 2010 NBA free agent landscape.

If Bosh were to leave for the Lakers or Rockets -- teams he would be expected to sign with, given the financial advantages involved in doing so -- it would change things for the Nets and Knicks.

PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

I remember a segment on NBATV once, talking about Hakeem and Sampson (since I didn't get to see them live in the 80s) and Duncan and Robinson. Kind of funny, really. People were upset and believed that Houston needed a big center such as a Mark Eaton manning the middle, because both Twin Towers lacked thickness and strength.

Same thing was said when Duncan came into the NBA. Most were on top of it and KNEW the Spurs were headed for greatness, but there were a few that worried about Shaq and the Lakers, as LA was throwing players in and out of the lineup all season long (I believe it was Reid, Rodman, and Knight).

The Spurs swept us because we couldn't contain two aggressive, versatile centers.

The contenders we could face all have slow centers, besides the Magic. Boston has Perkins, Cleveland has Shaq, the Spurs have an older Duncan and McDyess, the Nuggets have Nene, Dallas has Dampier. How are any of those guys going to stop Gasol for 40 minutes?

And history tells us that length hurts the "bigger bigs" more than anything else. Gasol and Bosh have length, they can recover on defense quickly, and they are high IQ players.

You take this trade, no matter what. You take it if we send off Farmar, Vujacic, Brown, Walton, or Powell with Bynum. Even Fisher (which won't happen). This creates so many mismatches with Gasol, Bosh, Odom and Artest being able to play at least two positions each, teams will feel like they are playing Nash, Marion, Amare and Kobe Bryant.

Plus, it's the triangle offense. The possibilities are endless with Bosh at the four. It gives Kobe so much room to do ANYTHING, including taking guys in the post whenever he wants.

Non-Lakers fans/supporters are scared for that very reason, and they have a right to be. A Kobe, Bosh, Gasol, Artest, Odom and Phil basketball team can win 70 games.

Man idk about this :(

Gasol and Bynum form a nice twin towers. Sure Bosh is dominant offensively, but ive always been skepticle about his defense. It would sure make us a better team with him than Bynum, but I wish Bynum could get his head right and play good even when Gasol is here. If we do this deal it will be like 08 Finals all over again, getting smashed by a physical team like Boston, Bosh and Gasol arent very intimidating (in other words, soft lol). Plus Bosh is a free agent after this year, he could possibly leave us while Bynum thrives in Toronto.

Not playing wise, just size wise. Gasol and Bosh will do more damage for sure.
