I've always considered him a top player of the secondary elite. If the elite of the elite are guys like Lebron, Wade, Kobe, Duncan and Shaq, than Gilbert is someone like Deron Williams, Yao Ming, and Chris Bosh. Someone who is very very good, and someone who you can build a franchise around, but not somebody who's every going to be "that guy" in terms of NBA dominance. He's not a bad player by any means but he's not hall-of-fame caliber either.

I'll say boarder line elite in this regard, he was an amazing scorer of the basketball. The season he had 3 game winners, he was lights out. He was never an elite player because to be considered elite to me , you need to play D well. He was excellent scoring the basketball, elite level, elsewhere, falls short.

Either that, or be good at almost everything else (like Steve Nash).

Arenas is a scorer, finds his teammates good...and that's about it. Someone like Nash scores and shoots very good, throws amazing passes, works the team game better than most, runs the offense perfectly, and gets to the rim much better than Arenas.

Very few cases where an elite player doesn't play defense, though. I'd consider Nash one case, the prime Shaq another.

Arenas has never been a good player IMO. He is PG, shoot first which is -_-. He shoots a lot from the perimeter, and shoots a horrible % for the number of shots he takes. Doesn't play defense. I honestly cannot think of a single quality about Arenas I liked, possibly his clutch shooting is something I am fond of.

Just thought he was always an overrated chucker with a chip on his shoulder, would rather drop 50 than win the game.

Arenas is not a star, he is not even a good player in my books. Not to mention his extreme personality flaws are being exposed now, I questioned his character before mostly as a leader, but this guy just flat out seems like a total douche bag. Definitely has been in my top 5 hated player list for the past 4 years or so lol...

Seriously, he takes shots you see a player like J.R Smith take, he has a low IQ of the game, he dominates the ball, I'm not sure how anybody could have considered him an elite player. But tell me your thoughts...

You don't [expletive]ing watch the Wizards, you just read outside opinions of his game and draw up your own assumptions of him.

He was not at the superstar level of Lebron, Kobe, and Wade, but he was definitely in the second tier of stars in the league in his prime. There's a reason he was a 3 time all star...

I think you forgot to add the second most over-rated player in the NBA to the list of elite players that don't play defense, being Chris "I'm all flash" Paul.

Steals are the most deceptive stat in the league, it's all about gambling and taking chances, rarely is it on ball steals. On ball he has troubles, at least from the games I've seen him.

From what I've seen, he's actually pretty good at on-ball stealing. Still, It's not like he completely ignores the defensive end.

Aboslutely not.

I actually have a pet-peve toward PGs who average 20 points but can only get 5 assists at best.

The only way Arenas would be a successful player on a successful team is if he was played much like Iverson was early on in his career, and that is as a SG.

The man is a scorer, not a passer and definitely not a team leader.

He's never averaged less than 5 assists in his career besides his rookie season. Although I don't consider him a point guard even though he loves to refer to himself as one...
