The Regime
At the two minute warning of Sunday afternoon's divisional playoff game, the Minnesota Vikings had the ball with a 27-3 lead and were facing a fourth down. When they didn't bring out the field goal unit, the smart money was on them simply running the ball up the middle. If they got a first down, they could kneel out the remaining clock and head into the locker room with a blowout victory. If not, the Cowboys still weren't going to muster four touchdowns in less than two minutes. Instead, Brett Favre dropped back and found tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the end zone for a touchdown -- making the score 34-3. There was 1:55 left on the clock. Cowboys linebacker Keith Brooking chased Favre to the sidelines and had a heated exchange with Vikings defense end Jared Allen. Brooking later called the play "classless." Shiancoe's reply: "Hey, you never know. They could score four touchdowns. We scored 24 points in one quarter last game against the Giants. So hey. Stop it." Share The latter part of Shiancoe's statement will be the refrain of those defending the Vikes' choice to go after an extra touchdown. You are both NFL teams. You are both good NFL teams, appearing in the second round of the playoffs. If you don't want a team to score a touchdown on you, make a play and prevent it. http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/01/17/did-minnesota-run-up-the-score/

EastCoastNiner
That's not running up the score at all. Also, if that was the New England Patriots, they would have scored, and then gone for an onside kick. .

Owner Real Deal Posted January 18, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted January 18, 2010 I actually think Brett Favre shouldn't went for the two-point conversion on that last TD, just so this article could be more relevant.
OSUBucksfan09
Nope, shouldn't be a story. Only is because a lot of Dallas fans are upset about it. Plain and simple though, its the NFL, not college. They get paid to stop that play, if Brooking had such a problem he should have made a play. Redneck
No. There is no such thing as running up the score. If you don't want the opposition scoring than stop them. Don't [expletive] and moan expo-facto, stop them in the game. Also, speaking as a Bills fan there is no thing as too big of a lead.

Guest The Situation
Brooking is a loser anyway. How many people got sick of the networks showing this idiot pump up the team in pre-game? Talk about running up the score. Ironic, Brooking? - How about when Dallas was blowing out Atlanta and he was on the sidelines acting like an idiot, pointing and stuff to the Falcons sidelines? - How about when Dallas obviously beat Philly and you see Romo dropping back trying to complete a down field pass to Austin? This guy is an idiot. It's the playoffs and you gotta flex your muscles because your next matchup is going to def be tougher.

Jenneral
It's the NFL. There's no such thing as "running up the score". Personnel on both sides of the ball should be good enough to earn their money. If you don't like what's happening, stop it. Don't go over to the sideline acting like an idiot. His Greatness
Brookings wouldn't be menstruating if that play ended in a turnover. And besides, it's the playoffs. Whether or not there was any conviction in that last touchdown, the Vikings had to keep that swagger tight going into the biggest game that isn't the Super Bowl. Also feels great to send a message when you were almost universally doubted before the game (and probably still are).
