Mariners: Griffey ‘ripped,’ ready for camp

SEATTLE (AP)—Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) is “ripped” and ready to go for spring training.

Baseball’s active home run leader had his second arthroscopic knee surgery in 12 months in October, to remove a bone spur. And Seattle Mariners trainer Rick Griffin says Griffey is “better now than he was at any time last year.”

Griffin spent a few days with Griffey at his home in Florida this winter. The trainer said Thursday the slugger who turned 40 on Nov. 21 has lost about 7 pounds.

Griffey’s even bragging about his new physique.

“He told our general manager that he’s going to be ripped. We’ll see,” Griffin said, smiling three weeks before the Mariners begin spring training.

“He knows he has to lose weight. And he has,” Griffin said.

Griffey hit .214 last season in his return to Seattle, with 19 homers and 57 RBIs in 117 games. He was a designated hitter for all but the first weeks of the season.

The man with 630 career home runs had his knee drained repeatedly in 2009, and often walked stiffly around the clubhouse with a bulbous ice pack wrapped around his leg.

Yet he still produced thrilling, late-game home runs, reminders of what made the 13-time All-Star a Seattle icon from 1989-99, beginning as a grinning Mariners teenager.

“A lot of people don’t realize, not being in the clubhouse every day, how bad his knee was last year,” Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu said.

He has Griffey penciled in as his designated hitter. Wakamatsu, who led Seattle’s turnaround from 101 losses to an 85-77 record last season, said Thursday at the team’s annual pre-spring training luncheon that the Mariners will again slowly work the 1997 AL MVP into everyday shape.

“When he can play, he’s going to be in there,” Wakamatsu said.

Griffey is Seattle’s clubhouse leader and the key to maintaining the environment of trust Wakamatsu created last year in his first season with the Mariners.

But just as Seattle is expecting more out of its rising team, its manager expects more out of Griffey now that he’s healthy.

“We’re expecting production,” Wakamatsu said.

Mariners sign Eric Byrnes to one-year contract

(01-29) 21:10 PST -- The Seattle Mariners added a right-handed bat, agreeing to a one-year contract with former A's and Diamondbacks outfielder Eric Byrnes.

Byrnes, who will turn 34 on Feb. 16, was let loose two weeks ago by Arizona despite $11 million remaining in the final season of his $30 million contract. The Diamondbacks will be responsible for all but $400,000 of Byrnes' Seattle salary.

Mariners looking for veteran bat

---------

The Seattle Mariners have had some kind of off-season: trading for former Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee(notes) and first baseman Casey Kotchman(notes) as well as outfielder Milton Bradley(notes), extending the contract of Felix Hernandez(notes), and signing Chone Figgins(notes), and re-signing Ken Griffey Jr.(notes) But GM Jack Zduriencik is planning another move.

The M's are looking to sign a veteran right-handed bat who can play left field and a little bit of DH and first base, according to the Seattle Times.

Griffey is supposedly looking better right now than he did at any point last year, according to the Mariners' trainer but he is 40 and the stress of the season will likely get to him at some point so Seattle wants someone who can back him up effectively and be ready to go in if Bradley implodes in left field.

Free agents that could be considered are Jermaine Dye(notes), Carlos Delgado(notes) and Hank Blalock(notes).

Mariners agree with Garko for $550K, 1 year

---------

SEATTLE (AP)—Ryan Garko(notes) and the Mariners agreed to a $550,000, one-year contract Monday as Seattle tried to address its need for a right-handed hitter.

Terms of the contract obtained by The Associated Press show the 29-year-old first baseman and designated hitter could nearly double his salary, to $1,075,000, if he becomes a regular for Seattle with 600 plate appearances.

“We think he is a player that adds versatility as a right-handed hitter with experience playing first base, designated hitter and catcher,” Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik said.

Garko is a former All-American at Stanford and 2003 Johnny Bench Award winner as the best college catcher. He has yet to play the position in the major leagues.

Before the deal, Seattle had just one catcher coming into spring training with more than two years of major league experience—Josh Bard(notes), a non-roster player invited to camp.

Seattle another veteran right-handed bat for one year last Friday, getting Eric Byrnes(notes) for the major league minimum of $400,000.

AP source: Mariners, Bedard close to 1-year deal

-------------

SEATTLE (AP)—A person with knowledge of the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Seattle Mariners and left-hander Erik Bedard(notes) are getting close to a one-year contract, pending a physical.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday because the Mariners have not announced a deal. The former Baltimore Orioles ace has been in his native Canada rehabilitating from surgery in August to repair a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder.

Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said last week that the 30-year-old Bedard felt good while throwing. Griffin said Bedard has three-to-five months left of rehabilitation.

Mariners may have unearthed gem in pitcher Mauricio Robles

-------------

PEORIA, Ariz. — A guy who watches young Mauricio Robles light up catchers' mitts here daily doesn't hesitate when asked how a 5-foot-10 pitcher can generate so much fastball heat.

Mariners pitching coach Rick Adair quickly points to the sky and quips something about God-given talent. But Mariners fans hoping to one day see Robles pitch at Safeco Field should also thank the talent evaluators for the Detroit Tigers.

That's because Robles, a left-handed starter whose fastball hits 97 mph and changeup keeps hitters lunging helplessly, wasn't even a pitcher when Detroit signed the Venezuelan as a teenage center fielder a few years back. The minor-leaguer acquired by Seattle in last summer's Jarrod Washburn trade assumed he'd continue playing the outfield until the Tigers got one look at his live arm.

"I'd tried to pitch once when I was younger and I didn't really like it and wanted to play in the outfield," Robles said Sunday. "But the Tigers saw my arm and told me they thought I could be a very good pitcher if I worked at it. So, that's what I did."

Robles spent hours every day in Venezuela tutoring with Tigers mound instructor Jorge Cordova, learning how to throw various pitches and mix them in during games. It didn't take long for Robles to make folks forget he was once an outfielder.

M's shut down prized acquisition Lee for five days due to abdominal strain

PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Mariners are shutting Cliff Lee down for five days in hopes his strained abdomen heals, making it likely the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner will begin his debut season in Seattle on the disabled list.

Manager Don Wakamatsu said Friday that the team's medical staff decided the 31-year-old left-hander will do no more throwing until at least Wednesday.

Asked if there was any way around Lee beginning the season on the 15-day disabled list, Wakamatsu said, "I think we're just going to wait and see how he responds Wednesday."

Seattle's prized winter acquisition from Philadelphia felt pain in his lower right abdomen for the second time in three days Thursday after throwing lightly on flat ground for a few minutes. He first injured it March 15 in a collision with Arizona's Chris Snyder while Lee was backing up the plate on a scoring play.

Even if he responds well to five days of rest, he is unlikely to be ready to pitch before the Mariners break camp Thursday. The Mariners have final exhibition games in Albuquerque on April 2 and 3, and at San Francisco on April 4. The season begins April 5 at Oakland.

Cliff Lee Update:

Lee undergoes platelet-rich plasma injection

----------

Cliff Lee (abdominal strain) underwent platelet-rich plasma injection therapy in Seattle this weekend.

It's becoming a more popular procedure by the day in baseball because of the success athletes in other sports have experienced. Whatever keeps the 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner on the field works for us. Lee is aiming to resume throwing early next week but remains doubtful for Opening Day.

Lee's injury has M's looking for pitching

----------

Ed Price of AOL Fanhouse reports that the abdominal injury to Cliff Lee has the Mariners are "strongly considering" acquiring a starting pitcher.

That's not good. Lee is already expected to miss the start of the season, but the fact that they are out looking for a starting pitcher suggests that his timetable could be a bit longer than originally expected. The Tigers are known to be shopping Nate Robertson while Chad Gaudin and Jarrod Washburn are available in free agency.
