Paul
So yesterday my computer wouldn't turn on. When I try to turn it on it beeps about three times and does nothing after that. I know it isn't the battery because all the CAPS lock key works and everything and I even plugged it up and the same result. The screen just stays black as well. What is going on LKR, RD, or anyone else! Help please. it is an ACER 17 inch. that is about all I know.
Lkr
is this a laptop?
Owner Real Deal Posted February 10, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted February 10, 2010 Three beeps is most likely a memory problem. You won't have to spend too much if you take it to a local shop (assuming you don't have a warranty).
Paul
Yeah its a laptop and its a memory problem? is that why the screen is totally black? and how much we talking here b?
Owner Real Deal Posted February 11, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 The screen is black because if your memory is shot, it won't load anything up to begin with...so you see nothing. I have no idea what it would cost in your area. Memory runs anywhere between $30-60 if you buy it online (unless you're needing 2-4GB or more of memory). Flip your laptop over and give me all the numbers on it (serial number, product number, mainly). Maybe we can avoid a big bill by having you fix it yourself. In fact, flip it over and look for panels that you can unscrew. See if you can find the memory stick(s) in the laptop by unscrewing one of those panels (usually in the middle). Don't remove the entire bottom...you shouldn't have to. If you need to know what a memory stick looks like, just Google it (laptop sticks are usually taller, but not as long, more of a square). When you find them...if there are two, remove one. Flip it back over and turn the laptop on and see what happens. If it does the same thing, remove the second one and put that first stick back in it's place, and try again.

Paul
Alright I did what you said to do with the memory, same stuff. What next RD?
Owner Real Deal Posted February 11, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 Were there two sticks of memory? Either way, you can take that stick of memory over to some place like STAPLES, let them match it with a new one, and see how much it may cost. I THINK your laptop is an Acer Aspire 2000. If so, that means you have 512MB of DDR333 RAM. Check this out: http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=DDR333+PC2700+RAM&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1313&_odkw=Acer+Aspire+2000+RAM&_osacat=0 If I'm right, you can fix that laptop for less than $20. If I'm wrong, you blow less than $20. Hell, you may even want to upgrade the memory if the cheap one you buy works. Otherwise, you'll be taking it to a tech that will charge you for $50+ worth of memory and $60 worth of labor.
Paul
Yeah there were two sticks. So are you sure that is the problem with it?
Owner Real Deal Posted February 11, 2010 Owner Report Share Posted February 11, 2010 Yeah there were two sticks. So are you sure that is the problem with it?Not now, unless both sticks went out. I wonder if it's overheating...or if it's the graphics card. It could also be the CMOS battery, but you'd have to pull the laptop apart to change that. I guess you can still try the memory issue. If it's anything else, you have bigger problems, and you'll have to take it to a tech (which sucks). It's tough to diagnose a problem like this when you aren't physically there.
