The Washington Wizards and Dallas Mavericks are close to a major trade that would send Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson to Dallas for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden and Quintin Ross, according to a league source.

The Mavericks attempted to upgrade at center this summer when they sign Marcin Gortat to an offer sheet that was matched by Orlando.

The Mavericks appear to have agreed on the major points of a trade that will send Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton to Washington for Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood and DeShawn Stevenson.

The deal is not completely done, but a source said that the pieces of the trade have been tentatively agreed upon.

The trade would also require league approval, which could take until after All-Star Weekend.

Howard's contract for 10-11 is a team option, which could yield a payroll savings of $11 million for the Wizards.

Dallas loses a defender, gains a defensive big (one that they've wanted for a while now), and they add an offensive threat in Butler.

Dallas wins this trade by a mile. I just don't get why Washington feels the need to trade for Howard.

Hehe, I'm sure Wizard fans like this scenario a bit better than the Boston one. :P

Not me. I'm super pissed about keeping Jamison. I absolutely hate the guy (as a player). I wouldn't mind trading him straight up for Scalabrine. It would save us a crap load of cap room and at least we would play SOME defense.
