He said he has had no contact with the New York Nets about a position with that NBA team, recently bought by Russian businessman Mikhail Prokhorov. The sale is pending league approval. Colangelo said Nets' president Rod Thorn is a good friend of his and he views the idea of discussing a position that is currently held by someone "distasteful."

"The chances of something being so outstanding that it would entice me is remote," said Colangelo. "Because I love where I am, the position I am in life, the things I'm doing. I'm comfortable. I come and go as I please. I don't need a job. I would never work for anyone again... Speculation is flattering, but that's about it."

Colangelo said he has been independent for a long time and enjoys the "full autonomy" he has as chairman of USA Basketball, building the team that won the 2008 Olympic gold medal and now forming a team to compete in 2012.

On whether he would consider the Nets job:

“I would not. I was asked over the weekend about that after the game. First off all, I have a lot of respect for them. I think it’s a good job, it’s just not a good job for me and the Nets haven’t offered that. I hate to comment and make it appear that the Nets have done something that they haven’t done. They haven’t done that. I was goofing around after the game…I said for a Russian to hire a Polish guy, that’s just not gonna happen. That wasn’t meant in disrespect to them it was just a way of putting it behind us. When we come up there we always practice at the Nets facility, Rod Thorn and I are friends for decades and I think it has a lot of potential especially with really good financial backing. A lot of people have said no one would want that job. If I was a younger guy, and wanted to go into the pros, that would be appealing to me because you have a chance to build something with new ownership, hopefully a new arena soon, there’s a lot of newness there. I do think it’s something that will turn out very good, but I’m not gonna be a part of it. I’ll be cheering for them because they’re a really good organization.”
