The Goods Posted July 14, 2009 Author Report Share Posted July 14, 2009 LAS VEGAS -- Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said tonight he was "not as hopeful" of re-signing unrestricted free agent Lamar Odom "as I was Friday." Asked why, Kupchak said, "It's just a feeling you get. You have conversations with the player's representative and, right now, I'm not sure we're on the same page." Asked during halftime of the Lakers-Clippers summer league game, if he was the point of throwing up his hands in frustration, Kupchak said, "Perhaps." Kupchak said he had no further plans to talk with Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz. "I understand it's a process. I am surprised it's taken us so long to get to this point." It's believed the Lakers have offered Odom a deal of more than $8 million per season. It's also believed that there are no other teams currently courting Odom, who made $11.4 million last season in the final year of a six-season deal he signed with Miami. "It's business, you know what I'm saying," said Odom on Monday. "It takes a little bit of the fun out of the game, but it's part of it." Asked whether he felt at all unloved or unappreciated by the Lakers, Odom paused and said, "Ummm, it's just the way it is. It'll pay off." He did however acknowledge a bit of disappointment the negotiations haven't gone as well as he'd hoped. "It's crazy because if you think about my career and playing basketball and somebody trying to do all the things to help a team win a championship, I felt like I've done that you know," he said. "But it'll pay off. It'll pay off." Portland seemed like a perfect fit but they offered Millsap and if Utah matches they'll likely go after David Lee. No other team can offer Odom more then 8 million. "I don't know," Odom told The Times in a phone interview. "That's why there are negotiations. I don't know. Of course I hope they can get it done. "It's negotiations. Both sides are going to give and take. That's part of it. I don't know how long it's going to take." The Times has reported that Odom and his agent, Jeff Schwartz, are seeking $10 million a season. The Lakers have offered Odom a deal north of $9 million a season for the first three years. Odom and Schwartz are seeking more money and years. "I can't discuss that," said Odom, who attended a screening party Monday night for the DVD featuring the Lakers' 2008-09 championship run. "You talk about money, it's touchy. It's a touchy subject. "The Lakers have been too good to me to rub people over there the wrong way. The Lakers have been nothing but great to me, and I want to keep the relationship great." Lakers owner Jerry Buss, who improved on his offer of $8 million a season to Odom, is getting frustrated and is thinking about pulling the deal off the table soon. Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak talked at halftime of a game between the Lakers and Clippers on Monday in Las Vegas at the summer league, saying that the talks with Odom left him "not as hopeful as I was on Friday." But Odom is not likely to sign anywhere for the mid-level that the Mavericks now, again, have at their disposal; he's accepted that he'll face a pay cut from last year's $14 million, but doesn't want to go down that much.
