Report: Odom Agrees To Terms With Lakers

Lamar Odom will re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, coming to terms on a $40 million contract over four years, according to sources close to the forward.

The deal will likely be consummated when owner Dr. Jerry Buss returns from vacation in Hawaii.

BSO report is false.

I had several conversations today with people close to the Lakers, and asked each about the status of Lamar Odom. Here's what I learned:

--The best offer the Lakers had previously offered was Odom was for four years, $36 million. But the fourth year was a team option, that the Lakers had to either exercise, or buy Lamar out for $3 million. That means Odom turned down a guaranteed three year, $30 million contract.

That offer is no longer on the table, nor is any offer from the Lakers. I'm told that if Lamar called the team today and said he would accept these terms, he would most likely be told that the offer is no longer available. Again, this is my opinion based on multiple conversations. I have not spoken directly to Mitch Kupchak or Jerry Buss. If Lamar and Dr. Buss got together over dinner, maybe that original offer could resurface, but I'm told that's highly unlikely.

The common opinion seems to be that the Lakers made Odom an offer that was far above market value, and he turned it down. It's my feeling that the team no longer thinks he's worth a guaranteed $30 million in the current market. Unless somebody has a change of heart, Lamar most likely will have to take less to come back to the Lakers.

We had Jalen Rose on the show Wednesday, and he says that's exactly the way this is likely to play out. Jalen thinks the Lakers won't offer Lamar the original $10 million a year, but he will settle for less and return to LA. Under this scenario, his mistake of not taking the original offer could cost him millions. Of course, if he signs with another team, the most he's likely to get paid is the full mid-level exception of around $6 million a year. Jalen suggested that the new offer would probably be "around seven or eight million."

--By the way, the perception that Odom's agent, Jeff Schwartz, has been making this worse isn't necessarily true. I've had two different people tell me that Schwartz is a solid agent who has taken every offer seriously, and advised Lamar to do the same. I had one guy who told me, "I'm pretty sure Jeff advised him to take the deal...it's always the client's call."

--I said yesterday that I thought the percentage chance of Lamar returning to the Lakers was 70%. Everybody I talked to today said my number was too high, and "it's more like 50/50." I still think it's more than that, but not much. If I'm Lamar, the Lakers still give me the best chance to win, can pay me the most money, and play in the city where I want to live. I know there are other considerations, but none more important than those three.

In other words, I still think he's coming back, but the situation has changed.

Buzz: Lamar update

I spoke with someone inside the Lakers organization who said Mitch Kupchak and Lamar Odom agent Jeff Schwartz have been in steady contact since the Lakers pulled their latest contract offer to Lamar last week.

Although the Lakers insider didn't describe the contact as "negotiations" obviously they aren't talking about summer vacation plans.

This jives with reports that talks have heated up in recent days, although the insider did say he didn't sense anything had significantly changed.

On the other hand, the fact that they are talking means both sides are open to a resolution, and when two sides are motivated things can come together quickly.

In any event, I should be getting an update later this afternoon, and if anything is cooking I'll post it as soon as I can.

Thank goodness he stayed in the West. Looks like the Lakers are still the heavy favorites next season.

Even if it is true and Odom is going back to the Lakers, I wouldn't call them the heavy favourites. Yeah they are definitely the favourites in my eyes, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see a team like San Antonio or Boston beating them in the playoffs if they are healthy. I would expect the Lakers to win, for sure, but it wouldn't be a huge shock to see the Spurs or C's knock em off in a 7 game series.

ATL, RealGM's link (as stated) was from BSO, who really didn't have anything. Us Lakers fans had no idea what they were even talking about after hearing all the mixed reports, just as we do every day.

But, let's go ahead and keep everything in this one topic, since Odom and the media seem to be toying with us all.

And Sean, I'm not sure about the Celtics doing any damage. I'm sort of happy they brought in Rasheed. I'd rather play him than Perkins, who is playing better defense year by year. But the Spurs...yeah, I'm upset about their team. If Manu is healthy, we might be in trouble.

I dont like that logic! Lets say Perkins plays the same amount of minutes he did last year, the only difference is this year they have a good replacement when he needs a rest, instead of bringing in Mikii Moore they have Rasheed Wallace. Thats a huge upgrade. Im not as worried about the Spurs. Jefferson is a nice addition, but hes not going to put them over the top he will just be a role player. Artest and Kobe can still shut down Manu and RJ, Kobe will just have to suck it up and play lockdown defense. Mcdeyees doesnt scare me, Bynum/Pau/Odom is still way better then their front line.

Blazers make 3-year offer to Miller

The Portland Trail Blazers have offered point guard Andre Miller a three-year contract, a source close to the process said Friday.

The contract would be worth $21 million, with $14 million guaranteed and

$7 million included as a third-year team option, the source said.

Miller, an unrestricted free agent, had been balking at signing a one-year offer from the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Blazers were one of only two teams with the money to give him more than the mid-level exception.

The Blazers have been looking for a veteran point guard for the past couple of seasons and have flirted with everyone from Jason Kidd to Kirk Hinrich.

With Miller the Blazers would get a savvy veteran who excels as a physical, post-up guard.
