Fear the Mavericks?

Kidd is playing out of his mind right now. He's shooting amazing from three (42%), he's averaging 10/6/9 with two steals per game, and his defense has been much better this season (versus last year).

Dallas has choked in the playoffs in recent memory because they haven't had a defensive-minded big that isn't a liability on offense. Brendan Haywood fills that hole, and he's a much better defender than DeSagana Diop, Erick Dampier, or any center they've had in the last decade or two.

The Mavericks can play fast, they can play a half court game, they have four players who can drop 15-20+ on any given night (Dirk, Terry, Butler and Kidd). They have defensive players (Kidd, Marion, Haywood, Stevenson). They are currently on a win streak that probably won't stop until they snag the top seed in the West (just take a look at their remaining schedule).

Dallas shoots a higher percentage than we do, a higher 3PT percentage, the only team above 80% free throw shooting, second in assists, third in steals, and they are beating us in all of those (and probably more, too lazy and worried to check).

If we beat Dallas, it'll be because of our defense, nothing more...and to tell you the truth, their strength at the PF and the PG positions are where our weaknesses lie in our defense.

If you say you aren't worried, you better open your eyes to a Dallas Mavericks team that is quite possibly the most complete team we've ever seen out of Dallas.

Dallas as an MVP type of player(Dirk), and 4 great players that could be 1st or 2nd options on the team (Butler, Marion, Kidd, Terry), and full of great role players (Haywood, Dampier, Bara).

I think this team has enough to win it all. I said it.

There a couple things that worry me about the Mavs. First, it's their uptempo offense vs. our poor transition defense. The Mavs love to push the ball, and lot of that is credit to Kidd who is willing to pass up the ball up go guys already running the break. He's really unselfish, and that really plays to our weakness because we have a tough time getting back on defense. Shawn Marion loves to run the break so we need to do a good job containing him and making sure he doesnt run past our backcourt.

Secondly, we have got to do a better job accounting for Jason Terry. Terry has just gone off on us in our meetings this season. We need to chase him off the three point line, and force him to either settle for a jumpshot off the dribble or pass the ball up. Beaubois has also emerged as a scorer so we'll need to keep track of him as well. It's hard to say how the minutes will be split between Beaubois and Terry but I'm hoping Terry's minutes are somewhat cut down, although I highly doubt that happens. Dirk and Caron will get theres, but the bench players for the Mavs can not outscore our bench players.

They are quite the stacked team at the moment, giving up almost nothing for Butler and Haywood who are playing beyond expectations for their new team. The Lakers defense matches up pretty well against them though, but who knows. It'd be nice to see a Cavs vs. Mavs NBA Finals matchup. Jamison vs. Butler and Haywood, friends become foes. :P

I said it and I'll say it again, this is a momentum they got from a trade, the kind of momentum any team can get from a move it makes, e.g. Nets winning 15 straight or something when Lawrence Frank became their coach when Byron was fired, Kurt Rambis took over Laker coaching duty from Del Harris in 1999 and they went on a 13 winning streak or so...

This is a kind of streak that goes cold. They're fired up now from the trade. But they haven't proven they can overcome adversity together as a unit.

I don't care if you consist of All Star players, in the playoffs, any team will give you fits.

I'd worry more if they struggled after the trade and then they figured out their mistakes, correct them and went on this streak. But they immediately went on this winning streak, they haven't found their adversity yet.

You should worry more about Denver ;) and that Arron Afflalo guy's defense on your superstar. He doesn't get in his grill, unlike Dahntay, he plays perfectly clean defense not Dahntay dirty that it backfires... and he knocks down his outside shots. Johan Petro playing well filling in (more than serviceable), Ty is about coming back, Kenyon should be back for playoffs, Chauncey playing the best of his career, Melo slowing down at this time of year to save it for playoffs, J.R. playing more composed in big games, and we got adversity we're eager to overcome in George's cancer. The championship road goes through LA, but the second seed goes through Denver.

See you April 8 with our healthy squad!

You forgot to mention when Nuggets first got George Karl and went like 27-3.

^Exactly, we were 17-25 in the first 42 games before George took over and went 32-8 the rest of the way. Statistically the best record of second half of the season all time? Then we ran into Spurs, found trouble, and couldn't recover, being swept 0-4 after winning Game 1.

Mavs will definitely go to Round 2, but from then on, facing the top 4 seeds, they're going to find problems. Looks like we will be their second round matchup, if this stays... I am hoping they can face the Lakers in Round 2 so they beat each other up and have little left before WCF showdown but bring on the Mavs!!! :aggressive: I think series is over quickly and the Mavs won't know what hit them after 5 games.

funny u say that, statistically he does show up in the playoffs its his team that didnt follow suit.

Stats-wise, sure.. Most analysts say that he doesn't show up when it comes to being clutch. Don't take my word for it.. I'm listening to the professionals who analyze things.

I thought the Mavs would have given the Lakers trouble earlier in the season, before the trade. Now, they are more than a team to fear.

Last summer I thought the Lakers were going to repeat without question. Now, it's a whole different story. I'm calling a Mavs - Lakers WCF. Whether LA wins will be a test of Kobe's greatness.
